Format: Audio CD
As a blues radio d.j. for the past 14 years, I hear most new releases, and for me this is easily one of the best blues albums of 2011. Not for blues purists or the musically squeamish, "Zombie Nation" is a sonic tour de force that takes North Mississippi Hill Country blues to the next level, recorded in Nashville with backbeat by Tom Hambridge and nobody on bass. All ten songs were written by guitarist/singer Elam McKnight, and there isn't a bad or even average track among these gems.

From the first notes of the raucous opener "Pojo's Place," the guitar/harmonica/drums triumvirate conjures up a massive sound that is sustained for the duration, save for a couple of well-placed acoustic breathers at midpoint and closing. The sound draws additional power from a robust female chorus that is remarkably the singular voice of renowned Nashville vocalist Kim Morrison. "Blues Makes Me Happy" is a high octane hill country ride at the hell-bent pace of a moonshiner out-chasing the law on a backwoods gravel road. The pace slows down but the raw intensity remains and the chorus returns on "Tom Cat Kitten," an ode to feral felines of the 1- or 2-pair-of-legs variety. "Zombiefication" is a crunching slow grinder with Morrison's wall of vocals matching Bogdal's soaring harmonica delivery wail for wail. A 2-song acoustic set brings the energy down to the front porch level. "Red Wheelbarrow" offers reflections on life from a country road view, paying particular mind to "the sad repose of the Homo sapiens." "19 Days" is a loser's lament wherein life's cruel blows make sobering up a futile objective, even for a single passing of daylight.

Elam McKnight has outdone himself again! This is a soulful and excellent album!
I have had the privilege of listening to him for quite a while now and he just gets better and better!
