More About the Author

An experimental dark fiction writer, Zoe has written several novels and novellas that fuse fantasy, sci-fi, horror, crime fiction, black comedy and musicals.

Born in Denison Texas, Zoe is a high school dropout and a GED graduate. Despite these depressingly low qualifications, she has worked as a computer technician, a webmaster, an internet help desk operator, a video producer, a movie theater projectionist, an amusement park ride operator, a telemarketer, a dishwasher, and a wrestling federation commissioner. She briefly attempted to serve in the Army before injuring herself in basic training. (Instead of "Hu-ah!" it was more like "Hu-OW!")

Retired due to poor health, she lives in Milan Italy with her husband Luciano, plus one dog and one cat.

As the title suggests, Zombie Punter is a zombie apocalypse novella. But this isn't your standard survival horror fare.

Eugene "G" O'Donnell and Jake Mahoney have been planning for a zombie apocalypse since they were children and can't wait to test their theories on the undead. But when it becomes obvious that these zombies are not exactly the classic Romero type, our heroes have to change the way they do things.

Add to this an insane neighbour who does serious damage to their small group in the course of the story, and a subplot about G realising he is gay and in love with Jake, and you have a recipe for a very intense story - especially with G as the narrator.

Frst-person narrative is the perfect choice for this story. It brings the reader close to the action and serves to make an already brilliantly tense plot even tenser. The character development for G is masterful; his transformation from nerdy nineteen-year-old into compassionate visionary researcher seems completely natural. The other characters don't get as much development, but they still change in believable ways in response to the events of the story. The way the zombies are different from your average zombies is fascinating, and the explanation of the plague is clever and interesting.

With secondary characters not developed as much as G is, you don't feel as much rapport with them. While this is a result of the novella format, it does make the story slightly less satisfying than it might have been.

There is a single sex scene (a gay one, if such things make a difference to you). I'm not a fan of sex scenes regardless of who's involved, but this one is easy enough to skim and well signposted.

Zombie Punter is a fast read and a fun way to spend a couple of hours.

Let me start by saying that if you're easily offended by sex, especially gay sex, you will probably shy away from this story. Ms Whitten doesn't tend to shy away from sex in her stories, so it shouldn't catch you by surprise if you've read her other work, BUT it's not something that you can't avoid as you read. I'm asexual, and I tend to skip over sex in stories as a matter of course. So if I can find her stories enjoyable, they shouldn't pose a problem to any one else.

The story is well worth reading and diverges from your run of the mill zombie story in several ways. Zoe's writing is very polished and engaging with excellent pacing, and her characters are well developed and believable. The zombies begin in a very Romero-esque universe but quickly diverge through the efforts of the main character to understand the nature of their transformation. And this is where my critiquing ability sucks, and why I don't do a lot of these . . . because I'd like to go into detail and tell you EVERYTHING that happens, and then what would the point be in reading her story?

So go! Read it! And keep in mind that according to Zoe, this story is part of a proposed trilogy! So if you like it, stay tuned to her website for updates!

Once again I grabbed it without reading the other reviews and bam....love it.
I've yet to find one that hasn't held my attention. Yes, there is sex, and yes.. this time it is gay sex. Well I consider myself pretty much a prude and do cringe at bit at some of the sex scenes.. but dang.. the story flows, you have drama, humor (lots of that)and I've yet to read a book of Zoe's that I didn't get hooked and had to read right through.

The story is a Post Z day with two VERY, and I do mean VERY GAY in your face/page sex, with a little Zombie through in for the fun of it.

I would purchase other Z-books she has written; I would just make sure that I read the sample before downloading and look at any reviews.
