Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Most of Dickens’ cherished elements are in place: the Victorian setting; each unforgettable character, from Cratchit to Fezziwig; the arrival of the three ghosts to alter Scrooge’s miserly ways. Other details—well, let’s just say they’ve changed. A plague known as “the Hungry Death” has so overwhelmed the poor of London that there’s ne’er a caroler about. Fine by Scrooge until the zombified form of his old partner, Marley, arrives (riding a fiery chariot down the grand staircase, no less) to forewarn of the three ghastly visitors. The mutation of this personal tale into one of sweeping grandeur makes for an odd if intriguing fit. There’s an implication that the plague started with Scrooge himself (a bite from a sick horse, of all things), though the final act of this five-comic-book compendium wisely chooses to make more metaphorical hay out of the poisoning of the impoverished masses. The glossy, spectacle-laden art is uniformly fine and plenty disgusting. If you’ve ever wanted to see Tiny Tim devour his own father, you’re in luck. A true Christmas (ahem) feast. Grades 8-12. --Daniel Kraus --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From the Inside Flap

Marvel presents Charles Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol like you've never seen before - with zombies! Eisner Award-winning writer Jim McCann adapts the tale with a new twist as Ebenezer Scooge must find some Christmas spirit before there are no Christmases left!

This Christmas there is no singing in London; gone are the punch, poultry and puddings. The poor, surplus population is being struck down by a disease known as the "Hungry Death," a horror that can spread with a scratch - or a bite - and fills its undead victims with a hunger that cannot be quelled.

Ebenzer Scrooge, a bitter miser whose frozen soul never thawed one degree at Christmas, may be mankind's only hope. One night remains before all is lost. And as the graves turn out their dead, three Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future will visit Scrooge to show him where the horror began - and where all things will end - if he cannot find the goodness within his own heart! --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

This is the complete review as it appears at my blog dedicated to reading, writing (no 'rithmatic!), movies, & TV. Blog reviews often contain links which are not reproduced here, nor will updates or modifications to the blog review be replicated here. Graphic and children's reviews on the blog typically feature two or three images from the book's interior, which are not reproduced here.

Note that I don't really do stars. To me a book is either worth reading or it isn't. I can't rate it three-fifths worth reading! The only reason I've relented and started putting stars up there is to credit the good ones, which were being unfairly uncredited. So, all you'll ever see from me is a five-star or a one-star (since no stars isn't a rating, unfortunately).

I rated this book WORTHY!

This is exactly what the title says (for once!) - a straight adaptation of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol into graphic novel format, with a dash (or more accurately, a stagger) of zombies tossed in, and I have to say that it worked!

I'm not a fan at all of zombie stories (or vampire or werewolf as long as we're covering certain animistic supernatural plots), but this one actually wasn't repulsive to me at all.

The novel carries a parental advisory, FYI, but there really isn't anything in it that need be kept from any well-adjusted, everyday teen - nothing that they wouldn't see, for example, on your average gaming card. In fact, by zombie story standards, this one was relatively tame.

Can't say enough good things about this tale. Excellent artwork, and it keeps well to the spirit of the original while adding in a horror aspect that excites the reader that much more. Clearly a lot of time went into crafting something truly enjoyable here for all walks of life. If you already enjoy comics, don't miss this one. If they aren't so much your thing, consider giving this one a chance anyway. I think you'll be glad you did.

I'm a fan of the classic Dickens Christmas story, but this is the most unusual take on it I've seen yet. It really has to be seen for itself rather than verbally described, but it some pretty dark humor. If you can't do zombies, this isn't for you.

Kind of tame for a zombie tale, but then at other times it waaay over the top with the gore. I nice twist to the Dicken's story, and the art and illustrations are excellent.
