The prison camps of Siberia still have customers, in fact over a million of them. Sent there for minor offensives such as stealing cabbages or even a hamster from a Moscow pet shop, the prisoners and their prisons are captured here by Carl de Keyser in brilliant colour, as if seen through some disturbing hallucinatory dream.

About the Author
Carl De Keyzer was born in Ghent, Belgium in 1958. He became a freelance photographer while teaching at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts between 1982 and 1989. He has been a member of Magnum since 1994. He contracted TB during his first visit to Siberia, and returned heavily dosed with antibiotics and uable to drink alcohol. 'Unfortunately you can refuse a girl, but to refuse a vodka is the worst of social evils. I had a hard time of it,' he remembers.

A realistic look into the current Siberian prison experience,

I saw this book in the bookstore of the Pompidou (which could be one of the better modern art bookstores in the world). The photos are fantastic, very human and each one tells a story of a life that none of us can imagine. As great as the photographs are, the text at the end of the book enriched the experience far more - it gives you a context for his photography, how contrived the censorship could be (and how funny - the story about the tennis court is hilarious). The bottom line is that you get to see something that nobody else has photographed, in a high quality format, that will educate you and give you something more than the typical horror stories of the former Soviet Gulag system. If you're like me and you love photography that is unique and really MEANS something, buy this book!

an exhibition that lasts,

I first saw the exhibition ZONA in Madrid / Spain, almost 10 years ago. Since then, I became an enthusiast of belgian photographer De Keiser works.
His works have an incredible plastic quality and although focusing on people, it depicts architectural and environmental details in the most amazing way. Along with Lise Serfati, he is one of my favorite references on Eastern Europe / ex- USSR worlds.
