"Nobody joins a nonprofit board to close the organization down," writes Ron Mattocks in The Zone of Insolvency: How Nonprofits Avoid Hidden Liabilities & Build Financial Strength. In his book, he spotlights the success and failures of 10 nonprofit organizations, including the infamous New Era Philanthropy and the Baptist Foundation of Arizona.

If you work for a nonprofit or church, or serve on a boards, you know that the responsibilities you carry are abundant, even staggering. And you don't want to mess up--especially in the tax or financial area. You don't want to be on the front page of the Chicago Tribune or Christianity Today--or a chapter in Mattocks' next book!

So...just in time, the 22nd annual edition of the Zondervan 2013 Church and Nonprofit Tax & Financial Guide (for 2012 returns) is available. According to ECFA President Dan Busby, CPA, along with co-authors J. Michael Martin, JD, and John Van Drunen, JD, CPA, "last year brought a fresh round of tax changes that are integrated throughout the text. The voluminous laws and regulations that apply to churches and other nonprofits are mind-boggling."

Unless someone in your organization has stayed on top of every new law, rule and regulation (which is impossible), this book is a must-buy resource for your finance team and your board's finance committee. Guessing and hoping are ineffective strategies. Seeking advice from a friend of a friend of Cousin Eddie may be the trigger that ultimately dooms your organization. Instead, use a trusted resource like this highly regarded guide.

I have used this guide for several years. Very thorough and helpful, especially when trying to understand pastoral tax issues. As a church Treasurer, this helped me understand what was lawful when setting up our payroll. Also, it gives good advice on other compensation issues, record keeping, etc.

I worked in the nonprofit sector as an administrator for over 20 years and a nonprofit consultant for 9. I have promoted this book with every client. I have even give old version to small start-up organizations because the book is filled with references to other relevant resources and sample forms. No fluff and no government or legalee lingo. The format has been consistent from year to year. It's a must have for every nonprofit.
