Book Description

August 1, 2002 0310240344 978-0310240341
Reach for almost any commentary or other Bible study text and sooner or later (probably sooner!) you're bound to stumble over a word you don't know. Unfortunately, the dictionary doesn't shed much light on terms such as agraphon, deutero-Isaiah, pretribulationism, synonymous parallelism, Transjordan, or zugoth. Even words you are able to look up can have specific nuances and applications in biblical and theological study. What you need is a study book to help you understand the study books. You need the Zondervan Dictionary of Bible and Theology Words. This hugely practical volume puts the definitions you need most right at your fingertips. Over 1,700 words and phrases from Old and New Testament studies, biblical languages, and systematic theology have been compiled, alphabetized, and defined as succinctly as possible. You'll never be left scratching your head again. The Zondervan Dictionary of Bible and Theology Words is destined to become a staple reference tool for pastors, Sunday school teachers, and everyone with an interest in learning more about the Bible and theology. The more you study the Bible, the more you'll appreciate having this unique resource in your library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A highly practical reference resource, November 5, 2002
This review is from: Zondervan Dictionary of Bible and Theology Words (Paperback)
Collaboratively compiled and organized by Matthew S. DeMoss (Dallas Theological Seminary) and J. Edward Miller (Teaching Pastor, Trinity Bible Church, Richardson, Texas), Zondervan Dictionary of Bible and Theology Words accurately, concisely, and accessibly defines over 1,700 Biblical and theology in easy-to-grasp language. From "abba" (Aramic for "father," a word Jesus uses to address God) to "zugoth" (the name given to pairs of rabbis who were thought to have transmitted the Torah from the time of the Maccabean Revolt to the first century C.E.), Zondervan Dictionary of Bible and Theology Words is a highly practical reference resource which is highly recommended for Biblical students and scholars, as well as the non-specialist general reader.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for students learning theology, Bible, and historical theology, not greatly in-depth, September 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Zondervan Dictionary of Bible and Theology Words (Paperback)
I was not a great audience for this book. I hope my 3 stars will allow you to judge for yourself whether this is an 5 star title for you.

I think this book is excellent for students learning theology, Bible, languages (Greek or Hebrew, and historical theology, etc. for the first time. It is brief and to the point on so many Biblical and theological topics. If you are feeling overwhelmed in a Bible College or Seminary and don't have much background, then this book is an excellent starting point.

Let me add to this: For the price you pay (especially used or electronic), it is hard to go wrong with this title. You will garner more than its price with just a few entries. So what if it is not greatly in-depth! :) For those starting out, they will love the brevity. Examples of entries:

Cities of Refuge, Phonecians, Peshitta, Double predesitination, Nazarite vow, Magi, Magnificat, Anakim, bema seat, preterist, mashal, dispensation, irresistable grace, lordship salvation, prison epistles, redemption, reconciliation, Reformation, salvation, satrap, showbread, incipient Gnosticism, etc.

Postpositives, proclitic, pluperfect tense, preposition, philology, anacoluthon, Structural criticism, anagogy, codex sinaiticus, anarthrous, cognate, polpal, construct state, etc. (For some language focused entries).

If you are new to this or just need a refresher, this could be your ticket. However, if you are well aquainted with these terms and their meanings, then this may not be your most prized resource. So, the intended audience is everything with this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money..., July 8, 2007
This review is from: Zondervan Dictionary of Bible and Theology Words (Paperback)
The title is misleading...Its about 5% dictionary of the Bible and more like 95% Theology dictionary and a poor one at that...
