About the Author

John Beck earned his ThM and PhD from Trinity International University and is currently an adjunct instructor for Jerusalem University College. His passion to aid others in their Bible reading has led to the publication of a variety of books, including The Land of Milk and Honey, God as Storyteller, and A Visual Guide to Bible Events.

More About the Author

John A. Beck has always carried a passion for reading God's Word as well as a passion for exploring the natural world. His zest for both combines and comes to life in his clearly written books which challenge Bible readers to mature their understanding of the physical geography, human geography (culture), and natural history (plants and animals) of the biblical world. The Holy Spirit speaks geographically. Bible readers who tune their understanding of this language will never read their Bibles the same way again.

Beck earned his PhD in theology (Hebrew and Old Testament) from Trinity International University in 1997. In the years that followed, he has taught courses in Hebrew, Old Testament, and geography of the Holy Land at various colleges and universities. He is currently an independent scholar and freelance writer living in Germantown, Wisconsin. However he seems most in his element walking the backcountry of the Holy Land pointing out various species of plants, talking about impact of topography on culture, and giving insights into familiar Bible stories which had eluded long-time Bible readers. He spends a portion of each year teaching in Israel for Jerusalem University College as well as offering seminars throughout the United States and the world, speaking on the value of cultural-geographical literacy for Bible readers.

I was somewhat disappointed to open the book and find out the pictures were merely black and white photos. I really expected to see color photos since the book itself has color photos on the cover. I saw the first black and whites and thought to myself that surely there must be some color photos, so I thumbed through the book and saw absolutely none. The only color photos are on the front of the book. The book reminds me of an elementary school textbook from years ago. To be fair, I haven't read the book completely because I just received it today. The book is actually smaller than I expected since it is called a dictionary and it has 282 pages. I own another Dictionary of Biblical Imagery written by another author(s)and it has 1058 pages with no pics. I was excited about this book because I believed it actually had color photos and would serve as a supplement to my studies. I was expecting something that was a bit more scholarly and visual with color photography since we are in the digital age.

A friend loaned me this book and I cannot wait to purchase more from this author. This book filled a huge gap in my understanding of the Bible. After reading many of the entries I returned to Scripture with fresh eyes--and read with a better cultural understanding about tombs, slings, and how milk was used in Bible times (just to name a few!). The author's writing is not only clear but vibrant, and he makes intimate connections to the Bible text. This book is like an encyclopedia of cultural knowledge that all modern readers need to know to achieve a deeper understanding of their Bible.

This book will be very helpful as I study the scriptures. I would recommend it to anyone wanting a greater understanding of imagery.

The Look inside features of the book showed it had colored photos inside, but they were all black and white. Very disappointing. Tried to get the right book sent the second time but still received the same one.
