4.0 out of 5 stars A good start for the layman, April 29, 2000
By
rossuk (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Zondervan NIV Bible Commentary, Volume 2: New Testament (Premier Reference Series, an Abridgment of The Expositor's Bible Commentary) (Hardcover)
I have always disliked one volume commentaries on the bible because there is never enough detail. This goes one better and is at least two volume. It is an abridgement of the excellent 12 volume Expositor's Bible Commentary. If you are not likely to buy the full set or even the CD then this 2 volume series is a good buy. I was very impressed by the 100+ pages on the book of Revelation. There are six pages devoted to Mat 24. It will represent a good start to a layman's library although in later years you will want to buy individual commentaries. The Tyndale series of commentaries will make a good start.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent abridgement of a 12-vol set., December 6, 2004
This review is from: Zondervan NIV Bible Commentary, Volume 2: New Testament (Premier Reference Series, an Abridgment of The Expositor's Bible Commentary) (Hardcover)
This volume and its Old Testament partner represent an excellent abridgement of the conservatie, evangelical, scholarly 12-volume Expositor's Bible Commentary. The abridged versions contain all of the "meat" of the 12-volume set. They are missing the NIV text and the in-depth word study material found in the original. (I am actually selling my copy of the abridged versions only because I am moving up to the full 12-volume set.) I own several one-volume commentaries, and the Zondervan NIV Bible Commentary NT is one of the best I've seen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best commentary of the ones I have tried, March 4, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Zondervan NIV Bible Commentary, Volume 2: New Testament (Premier Reference Series, an Abridgment of The Expositor's Bible Commentary) (Hardcover)
This commentary, along with its Old Testament companion, are the most complete commentaries of the ones I have tried, which either don't have enough detail or are too intellectual in tone. I would give them 5 stars, but they don't have the verses in the text. It is my understanding though, that some of Zondervan's Bibles contain much of the commentary information found in these volumes.
