Book Description

Arkana August 1, 1995
The authors of Golf in the Kingdom draw striking parallels between the remarkable and mystical events that sometimes occur during sports activites and the traditions of mystics and yogis, exploring how the religious heritages of both East and West provide a basis for understanding spiritual experiences arrived at through physical activity.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This work is an updated edition of the authors' The Psychic Side of Sports (1978) and purports to define the frontiers of human potential. Murphy reports the experience of mystical sensations and altered sensory perceptions by athletes during extraordinary physical achievements. Countless subjective oral accounts are quoted with little skepticism; all seem to be taken at face value. The last section of the book contains White's well-executed 1500-item bibliography updated from the 1978 edition. The breadth of athletic achievement surveyed in both text and bibliography is extremely wide, ranging from Charles Lindbergh to Michael Jordan to Tibetan lung-gom-pa runners. Even Carlos Casteneda, Barbra Streisand, fire-walking, and sword-swallowing somehow make it into the text. Although this study is a bit too subjective and offers too many pat answers, it will likely find an audience in large sports collections.

This is a terrific resource for anyone interested in the transcendent experience of sports, that place in athleticism where time slows and everything becomes effortless. If you have the slightest interest in transcendence through action, buy this book now!

3.0 out of 5 stars Quotes, April 9, 2010
This review is from: In the Zone: Transcendent Experience in Sports (Arkana) (Paperback)
The book is almost entirely made up of quotes from elite athletes. Also, more than 140 of the 320 pages consist of the bibliography and index. Typical Murphy.
