Even though I originally bought the block for some painted turtles I also use the block for tanks that have shrimp and crayfish. The block slowly dissolves so that there is a steady release of calcium in the water to help the crayfish and shrimp with molting. The block is well worth the money.

This was used to care for the turtles while we were away for a few days. We try to monitor their calcium intake and this seemed like a solution that would allow us a weekend getaway. It held up well in the tank and we could clearly see the gnaw marks on it when we returned.

It doesn't dissolve right away like the Tetra 19514 ReptoGuard Water Conditioner Blocks. This is the one to buy.

They do dissolve pretty fast. Within a few hours it was almost fully gone, not completely but definitely getting there. Anyway, my vet told me these don't actually work and recommended that I rather feed my turtle cuttlebone. I really do not know for sure how effective these blocks are but I think I'll just play it safer and go with my vet's suggestion. For the fact that they did dissolve very quickly I will give it 3 stars. I was expecting them to last a bit longer. Price was real good though, I'll give them that.

These things definitely aren't slow release. I put them in one day and they're gone the next. I have no real way of knowing if they're doing their job or not. If they were cheaper I'd do it just in case but as of now, it's not worth the price.

I bought this based on the description of slow-release. After placing it in the aquarium it dissolved 1/3 within 24 hours. It dissolves too fast to be slow-release.

It fizzed away immediately. I don't know if it really helped because soon afterwards, I decided to do another water change, for the nitrates and nitrites were still too high.
