5.0 out of 5 stars Hot item!
The product does what is claims, which is provide heat without light. My iguana loves it because it keeps his big cage nice and cozy, especially his basking spot. It does get quite hot, so make sure you have a thermometer, timer, thermostat, or rheostat to maintain the temperature you're aiming for and that your animal can't touch the bulb. Make sure you have a dome/lamp...

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, If it Arrives
Our first experience with one of these bulbs was okay. It lasted for about five months. I ordered a second bulb well in advance. But when the first bulb died, i opened up the second package, and the entire bulb was cracked in half. So: these bulbs are fine, if they arrive in working order. Wish the shipping dep't would realize that bulbs are fragile.

It does get quite hot, so make sure you have a thermometer, timer, thermostat, or rheostat to maintain the temperature you're aiming for and that your animal can't touch the bulb. Make sure you have a dome/lamp with a ceramic socket for this bulb. Also, pay attention to how many watts you'll need for the size of the enclosure you're heating. I was able to find this cheaper on Amazon than the pet stores.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great HeatLamp! Make sure it is secured!, April 7, 2011

Uses standard Edison type base (screw in like 60W light bulbs). Nice output power. Using it to keep chicken's hen-house warm during winter months to extend the laying cycle.

One warning, 150W unit can easily burn through wood. Chickens knocked this fixture loose from it's mounting and burned one of their nesting boxes up.

Great unit!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Durable, Long Lasting, and Best Heater Type For Reptile, August 9, 2005
This review is from: Zoo Med ReptiCare Ceramic Infrared Heat Emitter 150 Watts (Misc.)
I have two, a 100 and 250 watt. I must say, these heat emitters are one of the best quality heaters I've seen. They live up to their long life expectation and is durable to last until it has no life left in it. What makes infrared heat emitters so good, especially for coldblooded reptiles is the fact that it heats them from the inside out instead of just heating the outside. Heating the outside first is mainly good for warmblooded like us is because it reduces the heat lost through our body from our cooler surfaces.

So the best kind of heat if you have a coldblooded animal like a lizard etc would be an infrared emitting device. Another good reason is that infrared doesn't release any light source. Some creatures are annoyed by the light.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta love it!, January 11, 2011

I love my CHE (ceramic heat emitter) the price may seem prohibitive but they last forever and are cheap to power!

Good Points:
-do not require very much electricity to run so are very cheap
-depending in the lamp fixture you use they can heat either a small basking area or a decent portion of a tank

Downside:
-they get really really hot (281 degrees F on the bulb)! be sure that they are very stable-ly rigged to or above your tank so that they cannot fall easily, as they could be a MAJOR FIRE HAZARD if they were to fall on fabric or some carpets
-make sure that the screen of your tank is not plastic mesh if it is do not put a lamp with this bulb directly on top, it will eventually melt

Please note: Try to minimize touching the bulb directly as the oil on your fingers will shorten the life of the bulb

As long as these are safely used they are fantastic and I cannot recommend them enough, they are so much more environmentally friendly then replacing heating light after heating light

If you use your own base be sure to have it extra secure with materials that are very heat resistant... when this lamp is on it gets EXTREMELY hot! Any duct tape and plastic near it will melt away. Make sure it's secure because this baby is quite the fire hazard. It's capable of heating a small space extremely quickly, though, and combined with the Zoo Med ReptiTemp 500R Remote Sensor Thermostat you can keep temperature perfectly accurate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raising Chicks indoors? Get THIS!!!, December 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Zoo Med ReptiCare Ceramic Infrared Heat Emitter 150 Watts (Misc.)
We've been raising baby chicks and poults inside our house for the first couple of weeks until they're a bit more hardy. Only problem, they will cheep and peep ALL NIGHT long so long as there is light out.

This emits the same amount of heat at a 150W traditional brooder bulb, and can be used in the standard clamp brooder lights. Now I can enjoy watching my kids play with the chicks during the day, and still have my peace and quiet at night.

The Amazon price for this was outstanding and the delivery quick. The Zoo Med ReptiCare IR heater is the best heater I have found for herps. Anyone keeping a reptile should have, as a minimum, a proper habitat, reliable IR heater and a proper light. The herps we have rescued often suffer from an inadequate environment and improper diet. PLEASE read, learn and be certain you are willing and able to properly care for all critters you bring into your house, try to get a rescue animal -- they need a home, then buy only the best equipment for them, like Zoo Med heaters and keep your critters healthy (don't cut corners) -- they depend on you.

This item was purchased to replace a 150W infrared bulb in a chicken coop. It seems to put out the same amount of heat (150W), and has the added bonus of not producing any visible light.

So why did I give it only 4 stars? I just can't bring myself to writing that I love a ceramic heater.
