Real science, fun for some, weak graphics = 4 stars,

This review is from: Zoo Vet (PC & Mac) (CD-ROM)
The "zoo vet" concept is this: you are the vetenarian at a zoo. The keepers alert you when animals are behaving strangely, and you go check them out. Your job is to identify their medical problem and treat them properly so they get well!
The diagnostic tools for this seem super-realistic and detailed. They seem based on real cases - a flamingo with a hurt foot, a zebra that's a bit manic, a camel who must be readied for transport to another zoo. For each case, you can interview the keepers, and choose from between various implements (stethoscope, forceps, hypodermic, razor, etc. etc) to solve the problem. You get a score for each bit of correct handling and if you manage a case perfectly you get an award for your "perfect score" shelf. So, the greatest strengths: if you (or your kid) wants to be a vet - this will be better than Disneyland. My 7-year-old daughter has wanted to be a vet since she was in pre-school, and she LOVES this. The game teaches some useful skills (scientific inquiry...i.e., how to ask good diagnostic questions; comparing certain values against a normal range...i.e., "is that bear's pulse normal," etc.) But, if you just want to play a fun game, I see three problems: 1) Once you've played all the cases (about 30 at 3 levels of difficulty), you're done. The fun is gone. 2) The computer-generated graphics (especially the keepers) are pretty bad. Really bad, actually. 3) If you don't like to look at gross stuff (tumors, stitches), you're not going to like this. The graphics for these may not be sophisticated but they are a bit too realistic for the faint of heart. So 5 stars for wanna-be vets over, say, 8-9 years old, 4.5 for younger wannabes, maybe 3 for everyone else.

Wonderful!,
A Kid's Review

Parents: This game is safe for children. Don`t worry, the animals don`t die. Children: You may lose some challenges. There are 3 vet techs. One, an orange haired women who is kind of strict. Another, a dark haired man who is mean.(and kind of weird, he says "Dude" a lot) The last, my favorite, a dark haired women with her hair in a pony tail. She is really nice! You have to help animals with problems. Like a flamingo who is limping, a hyper zebra, and more grossly, the giraffe with a stool problem. Some of the graphics make me grossed out. Like an ear of an animal. Over all, a MUST buy!

Very fun but too short,

I got this game on Christmas day, and I love it. You get to treat and care for the animals that need your help. You get to treat monkeys, lions, bears, and so much more. You get to decorate your office, answer trivia questions, learn about the vet's positions, and of course...be the vet!
This game is very short. It only took my one day to beat the game. I really wished that they made it a little longer. -Melissa

my daughter got this for Christmas and LOVES it. she is animal-obsessed and is the type that will watch Animal Planet over cartoons.... if this sounds like your child--try the game! it's funny, extremely educational, and a pinch of gross... There are animal that need health exams or have problems to be diagnosed. One deer, for instance, had an unknown growth on it's bottom.LOL there are tools to take blood, tissue samples, and "other samples"...LOL A magnifying glass allows closer looks at the problems. All of the silliness aside, my child knows medical terms, real medical procedures etc... A BIG hit!!!Tons of fun for true animal lovers...

It is a great game. The keepers alert you when the animals are behaving strangely. You have different tools( thermometer, urine test , oral medication. When you succesfully complete each case, you will have a trophy. Thre are many cases( reindeer's annual exam, flamingo limping and a giraffee with loose stool. I learned a lot from this game. Perfect game for Vet Becomers.

Miami Animal Police is more interesting than Zoo Vet,

In this game you are a zoo vet.You get to treat pandas, reindeers, hippos, otters, lions, camels, gorrilas, chimps, polar bears, bears, geckos, penguins, mountain goats, kangaroos, flamingos, rhinos, giraffes, hawks, lionesses and much more.
You get to treat health problems such as parasites, tooth abcesses, kidney infections, eye infections, overgrown teeth, fleas, do the tests, do the surgery. So, at the best strenghts, if you or your child wants to be a vet- this is the perfect game for you. Me( 11 years old always wanted to be an Animal Control Officer like Deanna Graff - this will be better than EuroDisney. You have over 30 veterinary tools ( stool tests, a magnifying glass that lets you look closer at the problem, a hair clipper and a X ray. LOL! There are tools that you use to take blood and stool sampales. There are animals that need health exams or health problems that need to be diagonosed. For instance, a reindeer had overgrown hooves that need to be trimmed back to a normal size. There are three difficulty levels( easy, normal and hard. To me they were very easy. You get to ask questions about the animal's condition( is that hippo's pulse normal. And there were animals that had specific injuries, for instance a hawk that was limping on her left leg. But if you want to play a fun game, I noticed a few problems: 1( There are 3 levels of difficulty at about 30 cases. The fun is gone, 2( If you hate looking at gross stuff ( tumors, stiches, hippos you aren't going to like this. 3( The computer animated graphics( especially the vet techs are very bad. 4( Zoo vet is less interesting than Miami Animal Police. 5( I give this game 5 stars and I reccomend it for future vets over 8- 9 years old, 4- 5 years old and for the little kids, maybe 6 years old. The sound is excellent so is the audio.

I just found out about "Zoo Vet" just this morning, actually! I played the demo on www.legacyinteractive.com in the games tab. It's really fun! You get to ask questions, draw blood...and when your done, you sign out telling the problem. I want to get this game for Christmas! Parents: It's rated E for Everyone, with not a lot of gory things for kids. Kids: You'll hsve so much fun tending to animals! Check out the demo now!

My 7 year old daughter loves this game. It has several levels and so far, she's still on the easy level which walks her through all of the exams and explains things along the way. My one complaint is that there is a lot of reading with medical terms so I've been spending a lot of time helping her. On the bright side though, she's learned how to read words like liver, intestine and antibiotic which is pretty good for a 7 year old. It's a great learning experience for a little vet-to-be.
