Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 3-Jolivet presents striking, oversized panoramas of living creatures from all corners of the globe. The animals appear in eclectic groups such as "underground," "at night," or "black and white" rather than more conventional divisions. The resulting patterns reveal the variety yet interconnectedness of the living world. Younger children will enjoy hunting for the chameleon that can be found on each spread, which may be challenging since it changes color and posture from page to page. Adults may consult the four pages of notes written in small type at book's end to learn a fact or two about each animal. However, the text is really a supplement to the splendid illustrations. Besides its attraction for browsers and its potential as an attention-getting introduction to studies about animals, the book could serve as a stimulus for students working on graphic-design projects. Consequently, the audience for this lovely volume may extend well beyond the primary grades.

From Booklist

PreS. A teeming zoo of creatures swims, flies, and stampedes through the nearly two-foot-tall pages of this beautifully illustrated French import. There are few words and no story. Instead, Jolivet groups her animals loosely into sometimes rhyming categories related to habitats, habits, or appearance: "In the Trees, "In the Seas, "At Night," "Spots and Stripes," and so on. Rendered in bright colors and in the bold, clean lines and graphic contrasts of linoleum cuts, the animals appear in chaotic spreads that may be more decorative than instructive. But the book's magnificent size and diversity of animals make a powerful visual impact that will easily attract preschoolers to the expansive pages, where they'll point to the animals they know and discover a world of new species. Browsers will also like the hide-and-seek game offered by a hidden chameleon on each page. An appendix, printed in tiny type, offers one or two facts about each of the many animals featured in the book. An unusual, and unusually handsome, offering. Gillian Engberg

One thing, I didn't realize how tall the book was going to be!

It has beautifully crafted illustrations and artistic groupings of animals-not the typical ABC animal picture book.

This larger than life book appeals to children because of it's very large size. The art work is outstanding and because there is very little written word except the name of all the animals it lends itself to discussion. My 2-1/2 year old grandson Gavin loves it. Also on every page is a chameleon who changes to be like the animals on the page, so finding him is another adventure for young folks. Animals are grouped in interesting ways, for example "black and white animals", not your average animal book. As a biologist, animal lover, and grandparent it is an A+ read. And at such a reasonable price I bought two. Buy it, you will love it!

I loved this book. It's an oversized book and it's full of animals that you find in the Zoo. The illustrations of the animials are simply beautiful. Exactly my taste. The book has barely any text, only pages full of animials along with their names.

I love this book. I am an art teacher and I use this book in my class as reference for all the beautiful yet simple graphic shapes Ms. Jolivet produces in her work depicting animals

This is such a great book. My daughter and I spend lots of time looking at all the beautiful pictures. There is no text but we will sometime pick an animal and look it up online to learn more about it. It is huge and fun to look at on the ground. My daughter is only 2 so she needs my help turning the pages so they don't rip. I like how the animals are categorized by where they live. My MIl loves this book so much she just bought one for her yoga instructor that is due in May

I love this book! It has beautifully crafted illustrations and artistic groupings of animals-not the typical ABC animal picture book. I love its larger size and I enjoyed the interesting information tidbits located in the back pages of the book. Adults can really enjoy spending time looking at this book with their kids.

My daughter found this book at a preschool class one day, being an animal lover I *had* to get it. This book is wonderful, it has such a wide variety of animals, names for every single one, and in the back there is an index of sorts, with every animal listed alphabetically, the page(s) they can be found on, and some interesting facts about each one. Really a fantastic book. I'm so glad we came across it or I'd never have known about this awesome book!

And the opinion that matters most: Our daughter adores it. So much that she has "broke it" (ripped it) a few times with all her excited page turning. She can name a good portion of the animals, and now is to the age of asking what the unrecognized ones are and attempting to repeat the names.

This a very large (coffee table size) book filled with wonderful graphic illustrations of different animals by groups such as animals found in the desert under "Hot"; creatures found "On the Seabed"; animals with "Spots and Stripes". Great book. I'm a graphic artist and appreciate the book from an artistic point of view. My 4-1/2 year old daughter loves to find the chameleon among each group in the book. Brief description of each animal and creature is found at the back of the book under "Secrets of the animals". I bought this book when she had just turned 3 yrs old. This will be a great reference book for a long time to come.

I purchased this book for my five year old grandson. We gave it to him with tracing paper, colored pencils, and an art pad. He loved it (as did his seven year old sister.) I wish I had known about this book before I retired from teaching. It would have been in my classroom. I will be purchasing another book for my younger grandchild when he's older.
We play the game "I'm thinking of an animal " and the players ask "yes/no" questions.
This is a great coffee table book for adults as well as children.
