Picture talking animals giving mating advice to a zookeeper who's an absolute loser with women, add a hefty dose of slapstick humor, and you've pretty much summed up Zookeeper. Griffin is a disaster with the ladies, as was proved by his failed marriage proposal to the self-absorbed Stephanie several years ago, but he's really good with animals. The animals have listened to Griffin pine over Stephanie for years, so when they overhear Stephanie saying that perhaps her rejection of Griffin was too hasty, they take action. They decide to help Griffin rekindle the relationship and become the alpha male that Stephanie wants him to be. The animals are masters at mating, but their plan to show Griffin how to act quickly breaks down and they inadvertently begin talking out loud to him. After his initial shock, Griffin starts to take the animals' advice seriously--from how to walk and roar to the extreme of marking his territory. Surprisingly, the animals' advice really works and Griffin is about to get everything he's ever dreamed of--or is he? There's plenty of star power in this film--from Kevin James as Griffin, to the voice talents of Sylvester Stallone as Joe the lion and Cher as his lioness, Adam Sandler as Donald the monkey, and Nick Nolte as Bernie the gorilla--but somehow they're all somewhat underwhelming. This film has more than its share of cheap laughs, often at the expense of some part of Griffin's body, and some viewers will find that just right for a night's entertainment. Those looking for a moral to the story will discover that it's wise to be careful what you wish for and that what you think you want may not be anything like what you really need. Zookeeper isn't a great film destined for repeated watchings, but it's not meant to be--it's a comedy that will make you laugh a bit today and forget it the second you leave the theater. (Ages 10 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Product Description

All the animals at the Franklin Park Zoo love their kindhearted caretaker, Griffin Keyes (Kevin James). Finding himself more comfortable with a lion than a lady, Griffin decides the only way to get the girl of his dreams is to leave the zoo and find a more glamorous job to win her over. The animals, in a panic, decide to break their time-honored code of silence and reveal their biggest secret: they can talk! To keep Griffin from leaving, they decide to teach him the rules of courtship - animal style! Also featuring the voices of Cher, Nick Nolte, Adam Sandler and Sylvester Stallone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Comedy October 15, 2011
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
This movie will make you laugh. And, to all you wannbe movie critics, that are writing entire books and spoling the movie, remember what you are watching, a clean comedy. This is a great movie to watch with your wife and children. It is clean, no cursing, nudity or drug use. Just clean and funny, which is very hard to find in todays media market. Also, the synopsis is misleading, the animals show him nothing about mating it was more about how they would win the girl.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent, but James could do better October 14, 2011
By Jim
Format:Blu-ray
If Kevin James sticks to making these Happy Madison movies, he'll probably have many movies where he literally plays the title character, like the Eye Doctor, the Ice Cream Man, the Mud Wrestler, the Fat Man in a Little Coat or the Hotdog Eating Champion. But the funny man, once again shows here that he can do better.
Attractive and talented actresses always do Happy Madison films "for some reason", Rosario Dawson (Clerks 2) is the latest but she surprisingly shines. Surprisingly, since the women characters are usually one dimensional and especially don't get to do much in an Adam Sandler movie.
While Sylvester Stallone, Cher and Nick Nolte do good jobs in voice roles for animals. I'm not sure what Adam Sandler was going for with his Jewish old man voice....for a monkey though, his voice acting is awful. While despite being PG, the story is pretty adult and just about dating and the James character even gets a lot of love advice from the animals. Still, grown-ups might enjoy the film, that is if they don't put it on for their kids since a lot of the jokes are geared for adults.

BUT...IN THIS CASE..I ENJOYED THE GOOD OLD LOVE STORY WITH THE ANIMALS THERE TO BACK UP THE HUMOR. DID I BUY THIS MOVIE? YES. I WISH THERE WAS A SOUNDTRACK OUT, I COULDNT FIND THAT. ANYWAY. WATCH THIS MOVIE....YOU WONT BE SORRY....ITS SO GOOD IF NICHOLAS CAGE WAS IN IT I WOULD WATCH IT..AND I DONT LIKE NICK CAGE. WHAT A WASTE ON GHOST RIDER..THATS A ANOTHER STORY.

This movie is a romantic comedy with the talking animals as the gimmick. The plot was absolutely predictable: boy meets girl, girl rebuffs him, years later they reconnect, boy finds girl doesn't suit him after all, so he finds the girl who was better suited to him all along.

So what do the talking animals have to do with it? They are zoo animals who know how to talk to each other and to humans, but they maintain a code of silence and only speak when humans are not around. But Griffin is their favorite zookeeper, so they break their code of silence to him in an effort to prevent him from leaving. They do various things and give advice to help Griffin in his love life, but their advice gives Griffin no real help. Only the gorilla does him any good by helping to prevent the woman he loves from leaving town forever.

Basically the movie involves a lot of slapstick and some scatology. It's not for children and not really for adults either.

4.0 out of 5 stars It was Funny! June 10, 2012
Format:DVD
So I got this out of the Red Box cuz I really like Kevin James and he always makes me laugh

***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS***

There's very little about this movie that I didn't like. First of all, Adam Sandler's voice was just plain annoying when he was doing the voice of the monkey. I wanted to say to my television, "Adam, you're trying too hard. You're better than this!" Also whoever did the voice of the giraffe was just PAINFUL to listen to. I wanted to mute my TV everytime I saw that damn giraffe but I didn't cuz I didn't want to miss part of the story.

Also at the end when Kevin James is running around trying to find Rosario Dawson's character cuz he doesn't want her to leave the country before he can talk to her, when he's doing all this running around and trying to catch her... Why doesn't he just call her? I'm sure she has a cell phone and since they worked together for five years, I'm sure he has her number.

***END SPOILERS*** ***END SPOILERS*** ***END SPOILERS***

So this movie had a basic cookie cutter plot, guy tries to get girl, realizes that he doesn't want her and goes after the girl he has known his whole life that he really loves. It's pretty funny and I enjoyed it, it was worth my $1.30

4.0 out of 5 stars great family movie February 20, 2012
Format:Blu-ray
I rarely write any reviews, but after having read some of the extreme negative reviews I felt compelled to balance and even out the score. I can speak for our family and say that it had all of us entertained and laughing almost the whole time. It was cute, funny and had some good character building value.

3.0 out of 5 stars A FUN DAY AT THE ZOO March 27, 2012
Format:DVD
So once in a while you have to sit back and pop in a movie you think is safe for the kids...when suddenly you find yourself laughing and enjoying the movie more than they are. They're at that age when it's just not cool to laugh at something your parents like as well so they stifle their guffaws as much as possible while you smile and laugh out loud. Too bad because they miss out on some fun movies that way. Movies like ZOOKEEPER.

The movie opens with Kevin James as Griffin proposing on a sandy beach at sunset while riding a horse to the woman he loves, Stephanie (Leslie Bibb). Unfortunately unlike most youtube videos, she turns him down explaining how she thought he'd change and leave behind life working in a zoo. She wants someone more upwardly mobile.

Fast forward a few years and Griffin is still working in the Franklin Park Zoo. He loves his work and he loves the animals he cares for. While taking care of them all, he pays particular attention to Bernie the gorilla. Bernie has kind of sequestered himself from contact with anyone who comes his way including Griffin who tries his best to cheer him up.

Griffin's brother is about to get married and they hold the engagement party at the zoo thanks to Griffin. But as he begins to make a speech about the new couple he notices Stephanie in the background and stumbles on every word out of his mouth. It turns up that Stephanie is back in town and was invited by the bride. Could she and Griffin reunite? As the animals listen in to their conversation it appears a possibility.

That night the animals call a meeting and discuss how to make Griffin more attractive to Stephanie and reunite the pair. If not one of the overheard discussions was Griffin talking about leaving and they want him to stay.
