You'll get a strong suggestion from MS Windows XP not to install it for that reason. Aside from that problem, another is that it's controlless, meaning forget about using with Linux, and expect poorer performance (for instance, I could not download Open Office with it though I tried about ten times, my old serial modem did so the on first try). Also, it lacks modem...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, February 4, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Zoom 3090-00-00 V92/V44 USB External Controllerless Fax Modem (Personal Computers)
After reading other reviews I was a bit sceptical about purchasing the Zoom 3090-00-00 external USB modem. But I went through with purchase and have had nothing but great success with the modem. I installed the drivers on my laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D 8800, Win XP Home) and my PC (EMachines Tower 533id, Win 98SE). On both of the machines the connection speed is great (45 Kbps) even though I have a poor telephone line. Once I change out the old cable on my telephone line for a better one I should be getting a connection speed better than 50 Kbps. Just make sure to follow the instructions and the recommendations from other reviewers and you will not be disappointed. Also, make sure to use the driver for Win XP users that is available on the Zoom webpage and not the one on the CD that comes with the modem.

Also, it lacks modem lights, which are useful for a quick check of whether or not it's on, and/or receiving/sending data. It's marketed for travel use with a laptop, and may well be fine for that purpose; I was wrong to think it could be used as an all-purpose desktop modem.

Purchased a Zoom 3090 V92. USB to replace my 3Com 56K after a friend recommended trying Zoom. Went from connecting at an avg of 28.8 to an avg of 48.0. Drivers and Fax software easy to install. Worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST MODEM, September 21, 2002

This review is from: Zoom 3090-00-00 V92/V44 USB External Controllerless Fax Modem (Personal Computers)
This is a wonderful modem. It's easy to install, and gives high speed connections (44kbps to 53kbps) every time with NO drops! If you have a Via chipset on your motherboard, then follow Zoom's advice on their tech support page [web page]). Zoom says to go to [web page] and download the latest 4 in 1 driver file, and also download the USB filter driver.

After doing that, you should be good to go. I am not a certified A+ PC Technician like the above reviewer from October 5th, 2001. But, Zoom's tech support page made it easy for me to find out this information. Way to go Zoom tech support :0)

I recommend this modem to everyone looking for an easy to install, fast, reliable modem!!!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars No more Zoom for me...., October 5, 2001
This review is from: Zoom 3090-00-00 V92/V44 USB External Controllerless Fax Modem (Personal Computers)
I've either received a faulty modem or it has major compatibility issues with the VIA Apollo 133A chipset. I'm A+ certified & have never had so much hassle with a modem. Once I was able to track down the tech support number (not an 800#) that is hidden in the .pdf files on the install CD, I called & received the most condescending & rude *help* of any tech support I've dealt with.

I also have a Creative Modem Blaster USB & most definitely recommend it over the Zoom 3090. At least with Creative, if you run into install problems, you have great tech support. Zoom isn't worth the hassle. It hurts to give it 1 star.

I hooked up the modem with no problems. I am running windows 98 SE on and HP e-vectra. It is great that this modem supports the new V92 standard. Good deal.

I had nothing but trouble with this modem since I purchased it. My original problem was that it took forever for Zoom to publish XP drivers for this modem, and it was never supported under NT. When they finally delivered the XP drivers they didn't work. Finally, they delivered working drivers, but the perfomance of the modem was pathetic. My old generic modem which employed a Lucent chipset outperformed it by far. I got very poor cooperation from their support. I finally threw the thing in a box and forgot about it. I was very dissappointed because I had been a big fan of Zoom modems up until I purchased this thing. Recently, I pulled it back out of the box to play with it again. It still performs poorly on my system (Intel PIII 800mhz overclocked to 900mhz, 512MB Ram) I give it one star only because I can't give it less. I suggest shopping around.

I got the modem yesterday and it took less than 15 minutes to install it. Dial-up was quick and connects at 48800 bps all the time. Free software "adsubtract" is excellent at killing all the popup ads. You do not need to buy any cables or wires, it comes with everthing you need. It deserves the 5 stars. ...

1.0 out of 5 stars can't stay connected!, April 14, 2004
By
This review is from: Zoom 3090-00-00 V92/V44 USB External Controllerless Fax Modem (Personal Computers)
What's the point of having a modem if it doesn't work properly? I haven't been able to stay connected to the internet. Looking at the connection signal at the bottom of the window, after about 30 seconds, the transfer signals are off. Shortly after I can disconnected. First I thought it was my computer or my ISP but I barrowed another modem and I stayed connected for hours!
