The sound quality is great and so are the pre-amps.

As soon as I got the device, I pulled the H4n out of the case and put this right into it, with all of the accessories with no problems.

Zoom H4n is now obsolete with the release of this device.

I have been a long term user of the H4n and I swore by it in the field to record solid audio for my DSLR video work as well as quick mix downs when doing live audio recordings for my business. This device was a godsend when it released and I have been using it for years. I always thought, how could you make it better than it is today, and the H6 addressed all of my issues that I had.

Pros:

* The mic pre-amps in this device are far superior to the H4n. The noise floor is lower and my post work after shooting video with my DSLR is much better, the audio sounds warmer and clearer and it appears that the signal is a lot cleaner at low dBs

* 4 channels of XLR right out of the box! I love it! Now I can do a backup recording or record 4 XLR's at the same time! I can't tell you how many times I would have loved to push up the pre-amp just a bit to drive out the noise but I couldn't becuase of clipping. Now this is not a concern as you have individual compression on each channel and the ability to do a dual recording with a backup with less gain.

* Yes this does fit in the H4n SKB waterproof case. As soon as I got the device, I pulled the H4n out of the case and put this right into it, with all of the accessories with no problems. The H6 without the mics attached is exactly the same size as the H4n

* The gain dials are smooth and a perfect addition. Much better than the push button gain control on the H4n

* Pad switches right on top. Perfect

* Full Color Display is way better on the eyes and great in low light, and now the display dims to save battery versus turning off the backlight completely.

I had some difficulty figuring it out when I was using it as an audio interface. On the device, the mic inputs are labeled 1,2,3,4. And then there's the capsule stereo mic.
On the computer, the capsule stereo mic is routed to 1/2 stereo. The device's Mic input 1 is routed to the DAW software's Audio input 3, 2:4, 3:5, 4:6.

Regarding the device's own multitrack function, I'm still trying to figure it out. On the H4n, it was quite simple. You could easily select the track and record as an overdub into the device. On the H6, you actually have to go into the software menu and select Overdub. It's a bit more complex, but the guys at Zoom assured me that the H6 can do everything the H4n does, and much more. It does allow for multiple takes, which is a cool function.

On the upside, the recording quality sounds awesome, especially with the included MidSide mic. The H6 feels sturdy and is quick to start. It looks big in the pictures, but is only a little bit bigger than the H4n. However, it is considerably heavier (also from the added weight of extra batteries which, by the way, are much more efficient in this machine than the H4n), and is considerably bulkier with the addition of the extra parts. It comes with an awesome compact slim case.

And to top it off, it looks stealthily cool!!

Great Recorder and big step up from the H2n! I've had several different models of Zoom recorders and they have really improved over the years. I didn't bite on the H4n because the battery life on phantom and the noise were just not acceptable. This H6 solves the problems!

In an informal test using brand new 2400Mah NiMH batteries, I got 7 hours and 42 minutes of stereo recording on an AT BP4025 at 48v phantom. That's >7.5 hours on batteries. Awesome!

Another thing to mention is the usb input for power. You can attach an external power source (wall plug, external battery, etc) and the recorder will keep recording without a hitch. Remove the power, and it drops right back to battery. Awesome! For long days, you could easily power this off a high capacity usb battery.

Well designed, low noise, great options and 6 channel (4 phantom) recording. If you're looking for a good portable recorder, this is it. Also, ASIO drivers for 6-in/2-out to your pc.

------Edit, additional info about not having locking connectors

I've used this quite a bit over the last few days, and I don't see how a lack of locking connectors is a problem on the H6. My cables (of which I've tried several) all fit snugly and take a bit of effort to detach. I suppose that the connectors may wear over time, but from what I see right now, this is a non-issue. I've seen the juicedlink video that mentions non-locking connectors as a down side, but I see no reality in that. My cables stay in without any kind of problem.

Tested already with 9 pro mics, Audio Technica, Ae, Seinhauser, AKG, Shure, ....incredible recording, absurdly low internal noise (extremely important).

Zoom has a laser on one thing, portable recorders, and theyve mastered it, its got no equal for small portable recorders.

Very long battery life even putting out phantom power to Condenser mics.

Even easier to use this H6 than the Zoom H2n, amazingly, very intuitive and user friendly. Crisp audio, great monitoring, inline mini jack Mic on XY capsule head.

4 AA batteries, very sturdy build. Its true that the ZOOM H6 is a game changer. A few mics and the Zoom h6 and you can make highest level professional recordings, and transfer them quick.

So happy I bought it, way to go Zoom, more Japanese build and design perfection.
