The one issue that stopped this product from being the absolute best purchase I've made in recent years is the drum machine.

I've been using the Zoom r8 for the last 2 weeks and I must say the sound is phenomenal! I used to use the Boss 864 but the r8 has more advantages. The most important to me were phantom power and the ability to get uncompressed tracks. I'm sure the newer boss's may have that function now but r8's portability, design, price and affordability is hard to beat!

The best way to judge a recorder is hearing it. Type "eddiedskim" in youtube without quotes and my video will show up . The name of the song is "Blink", "I sing Over You", "Birds Singing". All these songs were recorded by Zoom R8 without any outboard preamps.

I bought this product for 300 dollars, and have recently seen the price drop to only about 200 dollars. I thought at 300 it was a steal... but for around 200? If you're even just considering this recorder, go ahead and buy it. It's incredible.

I bought this recorder because I was just tired of using my computer for music production. I don't have a great computer, so I experienced many problems right off the bat trying to use my computer to record. I experienced latency while recording, which set off the timing off all my tracks. My sound card was a piece of crap. I also suffer from severe OCD, and really wanted something simple and clean to organize all of my recordings on.

This did all of that and more.

The recorder itself will do exactly what most of you what: record from a connected condenser microphone, and allow you to mix and pan all of the tracks. You can also connect various other hardware such as synthesizers, drum machines, and more. But there are SO MANY cool features on this device that expand beyond that including:

- A built in guitar effects processor. You can plug your electric guitar directly into the device and it has digital amp settings in there with loads of effects you can play around with. You know those digital pedalboards by companies such as Digitech? It's very similar to something like that.

- Mixing... the mixer and mixing capabilities on this device are amazing. You can of course do simple edits to adjust the panning, adjust EQ... but there are tons of other really amazing things on here, such as the "effects" section. There are "mastering" effects on here, which are presets that will automatically make your mix sound professional and incredible.

This is one of the few pieces of gear I've bought that not only met, but exceeded, the expectations I had from reading the description.

This unit is kind of a bridge for folks who are used to stand-alone recorders, but want to go digital. It's almost as simple to use as the old 4-track cassette units. After you start getting used to it, you realize just how many more features there are in the R8.

Although you can use it as an audio interface to record your tracks straight to your computer, I prefer to use the R8 as a stand-alone unit and then use it in "card reader" mode to transfer tracks back and forth to the computer. As long as you don't change the length of individual tracks, you can edit them on your computer and then plug them back into the project. You also have some editing abilities in the R8itself.

PROs There are way too many pros for me to list, but, here are some highlights: The effects are great, and can also be edited, the sequencer and looper are nice, and I am blown away at the sound of the on-board mics. It's easy to use, and loaded with features that won't be found on other recorders in this price range, or even recorders costing a couple hundred dollars more. The sound quality is great. The auto punch in/out is one of the easiest I've used. The only limitation to how many "virtual tracks" you can record is how much space is remaining on your SD card. This is a great value!

CONs: Not many. The drum sounds could be better, but you're not going to find any other recorders in this price range that even have drums. The biggest con for me would be that it only records two tracks at a time, but, once again, no other recorder in this price range will be able to record more than two at a time.

The short answer: If you are looking for a simple way to record tracks to later transfer them to a computer, this is a great tool for that. You're welcome to push the limits of it and record and master whole songs on it, but the computer is going to be better suited for editing, sequencing, and handling larger track counts (luckily it comes with a good DAW). It's also a great audio interface with two on board quality condenser mics, and is a handy controller to boot.

The long answer: I spent a while researching before biting the bullet on this one. I kept going back between the smaller 8-tracks like this and the Tascam DP008 or Boss BR 800 and larger ones like the R16/R24 and Tascam DP24. Most of my information was generated on forums and from reading product reviews like this. After some troubling experience with Pro Tools LE, I wanted to move away from the DAW and get back to basics. There is something really wonderful about a device whose only purpose is to record, and the Zoom R8 does this quite well. The two mics on the unit are surprisingly good--used in stereo to record acoustic guitar they sound great. I have had this unit for about a month now and can say that I have explored most of it's capabilities, specifically as a recorder, audio interface, controller and sequencer. Remember you are going to use the recording feature the most on it. When I first started messing around with it I was pretty impressed with the on board effects. The drum loops that come with it on the SD card are of high quality and I was able to mash them together with a few guitar licks to create a nice funk groove pretty easily. I used the on board sequencer to do this. However, the screen on board is very small and navigating around it feels pretty dated. Very soon I was running out of tracks.
