I worked for a small ISP/Telephone Company and this is the modem we installed in every new DSL install we performed. We sold several speeds of DSL over the years from 1.0Mbps to 12Mbps. 1.0 out of 5 stars Obsolete and no longer getting firmware revisions
I just took one of these out of service. The new router, a netgear DGND3300, got a significantly faster rate out of the same DSL line. The last firmware update for this device was in 2007. It's based on Conexant chips, and Conexant has since sold or spun off their broadband chip business to another company.

So, I'd say it's end-of-life for this product. Zoom...

This review is from: Zoom - 5590 ADSL X6 Modem Router - 4 x 10/100Base-TX LAN, 1 x ADSL WAN - IEEE 802.11b/g - 125Mbps (Electronics)
I worked for a small ISP/Telephone Company and this is the modem we installed in every new DSL install we performed. We sold several speeds of DSL over the years from 1.0Mbps to 12Mbps. Once our service hit 3Mbps standard the older modems would die from overheating. These Zoom's never had any issues. Company wide in several thousand installs over three years I had to replace around 6 of these and most of the time the problem was determined to have been a lightening strike. Since leaving the company a couple of years ago, I have used my x6 as a wireless router since all we can get is cable broadband. I disabled the DHCP to allow my cable modem to handle that task and it has worked like a charm and saved me the $50 or so for a stand alone wireless router. Every few months our Wii won't connect and we have to reset the modem. This is most likely a Wii issue since the easiest way to get a new IP assigned to the Wii is to just reset the router. My only issue is now the wireless G technology is outdated by N, but I've never had any issues even with the Wii, a couple of laptops and a Wifi enabled cell phone connected. We even stream Netflix over this thing on a regular basis and never have any issues other than the occasional blip probably on the Netflix side. I'm not sure where all the negative comments come from, but I've had a great experience. To top it off, the last firmware update was in fact October of 2008 and the website is still up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Little product, big value, November 23, 2009

This review is from: Zoom - 5590 ADSL X6 Modem Router - 4 x 10/100Base-TX LAN, 1 x ADSL WAN - IEEE 802.11b/g - 125Mbps (Electronics)
I bought this device as a last minute replacement for a faulty Netopia DSL router. My primary goal was to clean my desk by consolidating my DSL modem and DSL wifi router into one neat product. I have a home office running VoIP (Vonage), fax over VOIP, a desktop computer, a wireless laptop and a networked security DVR. Thus, I also needed something to fix the jitter in voice calls, fix the fax sending problems and still collect video even when someone was browsing online. The Zoom x6 5590 does all of this very well and required very little setup. The QOS setup was super easy and the results were 200% better than before. If you are running VOIP I would say this feature is MANDATORY. In addition, it supports higher level features like intrusion detection, telnet, CLI and SNMP that you only find on $500+ routers.

The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because I've been unable to get the DMZ feature to work and real tech support @ Zoom has been difficult to reach.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reliable, November 6, 2009
This review is from: Zoom - 5590 ADSL X6 Modem Router - 4 x 10/100Base-TX LAN, 1 x ADSL WAN - IEEE 802.11b/g - 125Mbps (Electronics)
This is the only broadband device I've ever used but it provided satisfactory service for over 2 years. It was reliable and in my undemanding environment, fast. In its 3rd year, I have been experiencing intermittent problems which may be due to the external wires or to this device. Since I've read that modems and routers have a limited lifespan, I just decided to replace it. Since this model was so simple to set up and I've been happy with it, I decided to go with it again, despite poor reviews from others.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Experience, July 20, 2009
This review is from: Zoom - 5590 ADSL X6 Modem Router - 4 x 10/100Base-TX LAN, 1 x ADSL WAN - IEEE 802.11b/g - 125Mbps (Electronics)
After less than 6 months of actual useage, I could not stay connected to my ISP for more than 10-20 minutes at a time. On again- off again. I tried the "live" help from Zoom and after filling out the form they require, I was informed my chat was canceled as no one was available. I then tried the email procedure and had to fill out another form and when I attempted to continue, I couldn't. Bad combination of service and product.

I purchased a new and different brand from my ISP and have had no more problems.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overheated? I don't know., August 18, 2010

Bought this sucker September 2008 from Fry's. It was meant to replace a failing Speadstream modem and a failing Lynksys router. I combined 2 machines into this one. Well it worked awesome for 18 months. Then in January 2010 we hooked up a Wii and started having connection problems to the router. Then we had wireless connection problems to my laptops. Then we had internet connection problems. So it is now September 2010, and I am sick of learning useless information about networking my computers at home. I'm not sure if it overheated. It was a hot summer and I have noticed it to be really hot to the touch. Hot enough to know that it's not supposed to be that hot. So either I spend 10-30 hours learning the ins and outs of electronic/router/modem/network repair, or I spend $130 on a new modem and a new router. Since I earn more than the time it would take to learn about all that useless information, I'll spend the bucks, save the time, drink a beer while watching the Steelers, and still come out ahead. If you want to join me, I bought the D-Link Dir-655 from Amazon, and the ActionTec GT701D also from Amazon. As far as the game goes, I drink Coors Light, Guiness, and Coronas, and my phone number is 562-555-1212.......

ha ha.

1.0 out of 5 stars zoom adsl are worthless, November 27, 2009
This review is from: Zoom - 5590 ADSL X6 Modem Router - 4 x 10/100Base-TX LAN, 1 x ADSL WAN - IEEE 802.11b/g - 125Mbps (Electronics)
i and my wife bought this unit 3 months ago, and stop working! i am a PC repair specialist and know about these routers, and after going through 2 of these routers, I am deeming them worthless! I took all precautionary measures, etc., used surge protectors, filters, on the power cord and phone line and still the same out come! Please don't waist your money! Symptoms before it goes bad are on and off internet disconnections, approx. BETWEN 10-15 minute intervals of reconnection after previous disconnection, then the Internet connection light will go red, meaning drop off connection was eminent! DSL light will just sit there and flash on and off! Trust me, please save your money, and get something else! I used this zoom modem for MMO gaming, like WOW, Aion, and even for PLAYSTION3, but performance was poor! RUN FROM THIS PRODUCT BEFORE IT REELS YOU IN UNDER FALSE PRETENSES!

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible piece of junk, August 30, 2009
This review is from: Zoom - 5590 ADSL X6 Modem Router - 4 x 10/100Base-TX LAN, 1 x ADSL WAN - IEEE 802.11b/g - 125Mbps (Electronics)
I thought it would be convenient to replace my old 2Wire DSL modem/router with an all-in-one, and basically this was the only model carried by Fry's. As another review states, I had to constantly turn the power on and off to reconnect to the internet (and re establish the local wifi network). The set up user interface was pretty bad as well. Very non-intuitive. I wound up getting a Motorola DLS modem along with a D-Link wireless router and have been happy ever since.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tried it twice... both of them died quickly, August 26, 2009
This review is from: Zoom - 5590 ADSL X6 Modem Router - 4 x 10/100Base-TX LAN, 1 x ADSL WAN - IEEE 802.11b/g - 125Mbps (Electronics)
I was looking for a modem I could purchase locally in order to get online quick and after visiting 3 stores in the LA area this was the only one I could find that advertised that it worked with AT&T. The first one I purchased died 32 days after I bought it. Luckily the store I purchased it from was very generous and let me exchange it even though the 30 day return policy had expired. The next one died in 2 days. It worked fine before it died, but in my experience the units are not reliable and I cannot recommend them.
