Book Description

November 27, 2008
It's the board book with strings attached!—and the perfect gift for preschoolers. Die-cut in the shape and size of a child's sneaker and featuring four sets of colorful laces threaded through the sturdy board pages, The Zoo's Shoes is the only book of its kind: a hand's-on guide that's a delight to read, yet functions as a practical learning tool.

Lynn Brunelle, author of Pop Bottle Science and Camp Out!, has two children of "shoe-tying" age—the age when tying your own shoes marks one more significant step toward independence. This book makes it all easier, whether giving kids a place to practice their skills again and again, or giving parents the help they need to teach this curiously complicated task. It begins with Bunny trying to show the other animals in the zoo how to tie their laces, and then explains in illustrated step-by-step the basic "bunny ears" method of making and tying loops, referring to the book's color-coded laces. Readers help the animals—the zebra, the giraffe, tiger, crocodile, and leopard—tie their high-top sneakers:

Zebra's shoes are black-and-white.
She didn't tie them very tight.
Would you tie them please?

Slip-ons and shoes with Velcro have their place, but there's nothing like a child's feeling of Eureka! the first time he or she ties those pesky laces.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I wanted, June 9, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Zoo's Shoes: Learn to Tie Your Shoelaces! (Board book)
It's a cute book but not what I wanted at all. This book is simply about a rabbit in a zoo and all the zoo animals asking her for help tying their shoes. There's no cute rhyme explaining how to tie them as you go or anything like that just a separate list of instructions on how to tie shoes bunny ear style. I do like that it has multiple different colored laces on it, I think two different colors for the laces makes it easier to learn with. Unfortunately my kids don't learn by just reading a set of instructions to them, they do better if it's put in a fun way like a rhyme or song and this isn't either of those. I tried googling the bunny ear song to print and use along with the book but apparently Spongebobs shoe tying song is all anyone uses anymore and my children aren't allowed to watch that so I don't see using it. Back to the search of a better book.

It's a little much but my little ward seems to like it. But it is nice and big and fun to look at.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just O.K.--Not What I Expected, July 24, 2010
I thought this would be a book with some sort of rhyme about the bunny ear method... or the single loop method... which would help kids learn to tie their shoes. Instead, it's just a book with a bunch of laces with a story that teaches NOTHING. The book I bought came in a gift box, and if you're not careful, you'll miss the shoe tying instructions which are part of the inside of the bottom of the box. I'm very disappointed. Much better to buy a "practice shoe" (like by Melissa and Doug) and just go to Ian's Shoe Tying website.
