Think Pink Think Zoot,

This review is from: Zoot Locker: Best of the Zoot 68-71 (Audio CD)
They are all here the A sides plus the best of the B sides. The early think pink think zoot songs like Monty & Me, About Time & the boppy Little Rolland Lost are memories of a struggling Adelaide, South Australian group. Then along came Rick Springfield & BANG: Eleanor Rigby, The Freak, Strange Things & a classic B side Evil Child which is a real rocker. The standout track is Hey Pinky which was written by Springfield when they shed their pink suits & bubblegum image to turn into one of Australia's solid rock bands. This is a great blend of soft pop & raw rock at its best from the 60s & early 70s.

If your a fan of the late 60's rock/pop then you'll really like Zoot Locker. Rick Springfield was and still is an amazing songwriter/guitarist and added much of his own style and songwriting abilities to this CD. Rick's rendition of Eleanor Rigby is better than the original.
Being a huge fan of Rick's music, I was really happy to hear some of his early songwriting and guitar playing. Although he wasn't the front man in The Zoot, he stood out even then. The Zoot was a good band, but when Rick Springfield joined, they became a GREAT band. Awesome CD!

File Under: Rick Springfield,

Zoot was an Australian band that had rather strange ideas about image and initially made some pleasant but inessential sub- early Hollies type music, then got future superstar Rick Springfield as guitarist and made some pleasant but inessential sub-Badfinger type music. While fairly successful in their native country, Zoot didn't accomplish squat anywhere else and would probably be completely forgotten if not for the presence of aforementioned Springfield. Not that this means that they were bad, they were not- they were just, ummm... pretty ordinary, musically. They had a few good (not great) songs and featured a good (not great) singer. (Yawn). (Rick didn't sing.) But the band did actually kick in a bit when Springfield came aboard; his sometimes fiery guitar licks and promising songwriting chops resulted in at least some interesting moments. Zoot's one real contribution was their cover of McCartney's Beatles classic 'Eleanor Rigby', of course represented here. It's almost Deep Purple-like in it's intensity, and is actually a excellent version for the hard-rock genre. Not that anything else on here is even remotely as powerful. But it still gives this disc a reason to exist aside from the early days of Rick Springfield. (Side note: Sometime during his subsequently prolific solo career Springfield re-recorded 'Eleanor Rigby', using the same basic arrangement as his former band, utilising his vocals. Of course, it's not as hard by a shade but is even better.)
