The Zork Chronicles: more than just the game.,
By Glubert Heiligschleppen (East Coast USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Zork Chronicles (Infocom) (Paperback)
The Zork Chronicles tells the tale of Glorian, the supernatural guide, as he assists Mirakles (a muscle-bound hero) in a quest to kill an evil wizard. The characters run around the Great Underground Empire, visiting places familiar to those who have played the Zork games by Infocom. The book, however, is much more than just a tale of the Empire hundreds of years after the "mysterious stranger" pillaged it. Zork Chronicles is a thinly veiled satire which plays upon the traditional roles assigned to characters in epic quests. The humor is subtle, sometimes sarcastic, and always enjoyable.

I bought this book a long time ago and would like to say it was very well done! It's a journey through the great underground empire with intriguing characters and a good story-line (If you remember "Kill Troll with sword", you'll get an instant feel for this novel)! I'd say pick this one up!

Fantastic read! Funny and quick paced.,

Zork is one of those books you read every two or three years. It's highly enjoyable and it's a really easy read. Effinger did a good job on this one. It's one of those books where you just keep turning the pages and before you know it your closing the back cover. Really, if you want a refreshing fantasy novel, pick up Zork if you can find it. It's definately worth seeking out.

For the witty, cynical nerds.,

If you're the type of person that likes the game, you're probably the type of person to like this book.
There are a plethora of parody references to Zork, other sci fi, fantasy and mythological stories. It's really great if you're the kind of person that gets a smug little smirk every time you "see what he did there" and don't mind laughing out loud. It's loosely based on text adventure games of the same name - it's a light read that's easy to pickup and get lost in, and difficult to put down.

The Zork Chronicles: Beyond the Realm of Gaming,
This review is from: The Zork Chronicles (Infocom) (Paperback)
This is really a great book! For those of you who played the original DOS-based games, and those that played the truly original game on a NEC system with an 8" disk drive, you've got a good idea of what the book is about. It's not just another dull game book, though- it's an adventurous tale with the lure of such classics as The Hobbit. Forgo food until you finish this novel!

Effinger's Zork,

Well, it's a fun book to read. It's interesting and the humor is original. Actually, I suppose it's not original since it's taken from Zork. What bothers me is that the book is written too similar to the video game. The Great Underground Empire is divided into rooms separated by passageways that go in the usual cardinal directions. That makes it easier for video game players to play Zork but isn't the book supposed to be a bit more realistic? An underground kingdom shouldn't just be a bunch of rooms.
