Zostrix seems to work better than any other topical cream I've tried for muscle and nerve pain.

I developed a damaged quad & calf nerve after hip surgery with flaming nerves that were terrible. At the recommendation of a Dr., he told me to use the product for at least 14 days. After reading some of the negative reviews, I proceeded slowly, using the .025 strength for a week. It was fairly mild on my leg, and I definitely felt some improvement after a few days - so I then went to the .075 strength. After three weeks, I was happy to say that most of the time, I had little pain unless you aggravate the skin from working outside, etc. Sweating can bring on some pain, I think from opening the pores. One time, my leg became red-colored and I had to place a cold wash cloth on the area, which relieved it immediately. Now after 6 weeks, I have virtually no pain.

I use a cut-off rubber finger tip to apply it, initially, three times a day. After 6 weeks, I'm down to once per day. After showering in the morning, I wait an hour and don't have any excessive burning from the application. It's been great for me! Suggestion: When showering, consider the use of two wash cloths: one for the affected area only, to avoid burning in areas you don't expect.

I agree with another review here that Zostrix is very hot, at first. When I first used it I also felt like it was a waste of money, but then I gave it another try. The heat is definitely uncomfortable but with time that effect lessens. My rheumatologist says that continued use with Capsaicin will desensitize the affected areas. I have fibromyalgia, so I hurt all the time, any help is desired, so I try many products. I have found Capsaicin (which Zostrix contains) in conjunction with "Ben-Gay" type medications (containing Menthol and Methyl Salicylate), helps give some pain relief. It hasn't afforded me incredible pain relief, but it helps so I will continue using it. I also use the hot wax tubs for my hands. I wouldn't use Zostrix on the hands since touching sensitive parts of the face and body can really hurt if Zostrix is put there. Be very careful not to get it in eyes, nose, etc. I wash up completely after applying cream.

I am writing this review to bring to the attention of the buyer that this cream has a lower percentage of capsaicin in it than Capzacin HP Creme. It claims to be triple strength, yet it has only 3/4 of 1% of capsaicin while Cazacin HP has a full 1%. Also, Capzacin Analgesic liquid contains 1.5% capsaicin. Yes this Zostrix is triple strength of "their" original strength cream, but you might want to rethink and get more bang for your buck by going with one of the Capzacin products. Zostrix at $9 per ounce or Capzacin at $6.65 per ounce.

I'm 69 years old and suffer from chronic neck and shoulder pain. Every morning I apply a "pain cream" which I massage into my neck and shoulder. Capsaicin is very effective at relaxing the muscles because of the warmth that it generates. Zostrix is almost the most intense capsaicin product that I use. You have to be careful using this product because the warmth doesn't occur right away, and there is no smell to warn you. Don't touch your eyes or nose or lips because the burning will be really painful on these sensitive skin areas. What I have found with Zostrix is it lasts very very long. For me it can last for 5 or 6 hours. Possibly this is because of how I use it. I take a regular pain cream such as Topricin and mix it about 50/50 with Zostrix. Then I massage it into my neck for about 10 minutes really pushing it into the skin until the grease has almost all disappeared. About 1/2 hour later the "burn" begins, and I do love it. It results in less stiffness, less pain, greater range of motion--it's fantastic! I use another capsaicin product before playing tennis because Zostrix takes too long to work and I don't want to get it on my hands to damage the tennis racquet grip. At night I use another capsaicin product because I also want quick acting to put me right to sleep.

I was having some muscle soreness due to over exertion and bengay wasn't really cutting it. Also, the smell of bengay is pretty awful right? Smells like old Asians or something (I'm Asian so it's okay). For pain relief I would have to say Zostrix is one of the better topical ointments I've tried, it even comes with nifty application pads so I don't have to touch the cream, not because the cream smells but because it burns. It's made with capsaicin extract, the essence of spice. Be sure to heed the warnings on the product, I wanted to see how bad it would actually burn after a hot shower and I was writhing in burning agony for a good hour or so (not worth it). Did I forget to mention that it's odor free?! That means I can apply this cream at any time and go out into public without worrying about the way I smell.

I wanted to rate this product a 5 because I think I have found my new after workout pain relief cream. However, the only gripe I have about this product is the price. It's around 20 bucks for a 56.6g tube, I could probably get a few tubes of bengay and bathe in it for that price. Keeping the price in consideration in hard economic times, I'm only going to rate this product a 4.

If you're curious as to why the product burns more after a shower, allow me to give a brief explanation. In the case of a hot shower, the steam and heat causes your pores to open up and this creates a higher sensitivity to the capsaicin extract. As for a cold shower, I would imagine it would do the opposite and close your pores so the cream would be less effective (I'm not sure about this one, don't take my word for it, but don't go and try it).

Just to be sure, make sure you follow all the instructions on the box! ALWAYS!
