5.0 out of 5 stars Encore! March 17, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I discovered this through a review on the All About Jazz website, which turned out to be blessed serendipity, as this group is neither a household name nor likely to be heard when twisting the radio dial. This was by far my favorite album of 2011 (and I listen to A LOT), and it is still growing on me. The band is heavy on woodwinds, including not only the usual Adolph Sax instruments, but also clarinet, bass clarinet, oboe, English horn, and bassoon. Frank Zappa once remarked about playing his music with the LA Philharmonic, that setting free a usually fettered bassoon player to solo was a wonder to behold. No kidding, as evidenced here. The best way I can describe this music is "Gershwinesque", but absolutely modern. I particularly enjoyed the ensemble playing of the reeds in "Saturn 9" and the adagio blues of "The Trouble with Earth Women". This is a big band (12-piece, I believe), but there is nothing cliched about it; don't think Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, think...well, Zubatto Syndicate!

5.0 out of 5 stars Play that funky oboe white boy August 20, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I heard these guys on KMHD radio about a year ago and had to get their music. Their website was selling both vinyl and MP3s. They remind me a little of a cross between the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Frank Zappa and a feeling of bliss.

In fact the the funk comes mostly the fine lead guitar of Andrew Boscardin and the excellent rhythm section. This music moves fluidly from earthbound groove to otherworldly solo and back. These are the best arrangements I have heard in many years. I can't stop listening to it, and each time I find something new.
