Mini Naturals - 1 pound - Salmon Flavored
Great product for training dogs! I use them all the time for training (walking on a lead, sitting, fetching). They are high in flavor so even with our 7 month Golden Retriever, treats cut in half work well for a reward. Unlike dog kibble or other treats, these are quickly digested so that your dog will not be gagging on them as he/she works on the next behavior. To keep fresh, keep bag tightly closed and put a portion of the cut treats in a resealable sandwich bag. If they do get exposed to air and dry out, a small portion of a moistened paper towel in the bag will restore them to original texture.

INTRO AND GENERAL INFO
--------------------------------------------
My wife and I purchased these treats one day when we had run out of our normal treats. They are small, our dogs love them, and are much better quality than many commonly available store brands. Still, I had some questions about the ingredients, so I sent an email over to the Zuke's customer service address, and got a very nice response, pasted below.

You may be asking already, "if your dogs love them and they're good quality, why four stars?". Because in our household, "good" quality and "best" quality are two very different things, and in the (sometimes) murky world of meat grading the difference can actually mean health or illness and even life or death. I'm not trying to be dramatic, but after seeing the DOZENS of recalls on pet food and treats over the past few years, my wife and I decided (with the help of a top Amazon reviewer, Chandler) to get informed about meat quality.

This is what led me to my email to Zuke's.

Q&A WITH A ZUKE'S CS REP
--------------------------------------------
Hello!!

Thank you so much for writing us here at Zuke's, and thank you for the great questions! Here are the answers:

1) Your treats are made in the USA, but are the ingredients ever sourced overseas?

We are still made in the United States, with all of our meat, fruits and veggies sourced from the USA (with the exception of the Wild Rabbit and Venison, which comes from New Zealand). Our Salmon is Pacific Wild Caught when available, and USA farmed (Pacific Coast) when Wild Caught is not an option. Our ingredients are grown, processed and packaged all in the USA. I would like to assure you that we here at Zuke's would never put anything harmful in our products. Our pets are our family, and we treat them as such!

2) You have done a great job at NOT being part of recent recalls - do you have a recall history?

Our company has been in business since 1995 and has never had a recall, because of the methods we use to test. We test our products throughout manufacturing, and then one final test before packaging. The product is then packaged, and sits in the warehouse until the test results return from the lab confirming their safety. Only after the final thumbs up does our product get shipped. I would like to assure you that we here at Zuke's take our treats very seriously.

3) Could you tell me a little bit more about your meat content? I know it's not human-grade, but what specific inspections are made by the FDA for the meat content?

All meats come from USDA regulated and inspected facilities... The meat is handled the same way meats for human consumption are handled. It is shipped in frozen blocks to our manufacturer and is kept frozen until our product is produced......NZ Rabbit and venison are inspected at the port of entry.

Thank you again for writing us here at Zuke's, and please feel free to contact me with any other questions you may have!

SO WHY NOT FIVE STARS?
--------------------------------------------
Listen, I was very satisfied with Zuke's customer service, and their responses lead me to believe that they are absolutely above-standard when it comes to dog treats. That said, knowing what I know about the "standards" of non human-grade meats (and the animals they come from) that are used in dog treats (regardless of the manner in which they are handled) I simply cannot rate this at the full five stars. I feel much more comfortable feeding these to my pups than other common brands, but with recent news of super-premium brands with no recall history having to recall products (which they only do after significant numbers of illness and death are reported), I really think that human-grade dog treats are just so much safer.

I'm not going to plug other brands here, but if you are looking for recommendations please don't hesitate to contact me - my email is on my profile (click on my name to get there).

--------------------------------------------
OVERALL
--------------------------------------------
If you have been feeding your dog "regular" treats with all sort of animal by-products, Zuke's is certainly a step up. I don't want to discourage ANYONE from buying better-quality treats than they are currently purchasing. That said, if you want the absolute best treats for your pup don't have the time or resources to make your own, I highly suggest researching companies that use human-grade meat. Keep in mind "handled in the same way as meat for human consumption" and "human-grade" are two entirely different things.

Recommended, but with some reservation.

When I purchased my puppy, I did a lot of research to find the perfect healthy food and treats for him to ensure my dog has the best start in life. Zuke's has been a staple in our treat cupboard his whole life but no more! Zuke's has sold out to Nestle Purina who manufactures not just garbage food for pets but has also been linked to many of the deaths from poorly sourced ingredients. It is a damn shame this excellent company is glad to have been bought out by a megalithic corporation who will cut corners. Not in my pup's tummy. I will now be switching to Cloud Star's products including their great Tricky Trainers. trusts me to only give him the best and he deserves it.

These treats work just right for training my puppy. They do seem to dry out if left out but if you put them in a ziplock bag with a few drops of water and put in microwave for about 10 seconds you can give them a second life. They are flavorful enough to keep my dogs interest in working for the treat. I really like them and so do most of her buddies,so we go through alot of them, but I have found them at a lesser price elsewhere.

When my dog is happy, I'm happy :)
As a pet owner, I feel comforting that it's made in the USA.
In addition, it's important to me that the meat grade is handled like for human consumption and that this company is NOT part of any recalls.
That is good enough for me and I can feed my dog with a peace of mind.
I want my buddy to me with us for a long time.
I love to take him with me when running errands or driving around.
For that I found a very reasonable back seat cover, Bench Seat Cover with Back Seat Organizer. 3 Way Use! Innovative and Smart Design!. Btw, the organizer makes good use of the SUV backseat space.
Thanks Zuke for bringing these yummie treats and sourcing and making them in the USA.!

Our puppy loves these little treats! They are small enough to give him a few at a time, but I like to cut them up even smaller and use them for training. They are tiny as is (about the size of a pencil eraser), but can easily be cut into quarters for reward-based training. I will always keep these in stock for him!

My dog likes these treats, but definitely prefers the peanut butter ones better. One strange thing I've noticed with these treats is that they tend to harden very quickly -- so you're best off buying the small bag (seen here), not the bigger bag. It's strange -- the salmon flavor does harden faster than the peanut butter flavor. But, all in all, they're a good treat to feed your dog because they're so small. They're perfect for training, and Zuke's is always full of good things, not some crappy ingredients like some other dog treats out there.

The crazed-looking wild-eyed dog on the front of the new glossy bag used for Zuke's Mini Naturals caused me to wonder if this old favorite treat from Durango, CO had changed on the inside as well. Especially since the new bag's zip-lock zipper doesn't align correctly, so it couldn't be used to keep the treats fresh.

Since my only remaining stock of the old Zuke's treats bag was a bag of Peanut Butter treats, and the new Zuke's that just arrived is Salmon, the specific ingredients unique to salmon and peanut butter treats can't be truly compared in this review. The new bag of salmon treats use sunflower oil instead of canola oil, and contain healthy goodies like cherries and herbs (which the old Peanut Butter treats did not contain). But I don't know if the old salmon treats also contained cherries and turmeric, or if Zuke's peanut butter treats also come in a new glossy wild-eyed dog bag now, nor if the PB treats ingredients list has changed to include fruits and herbs.

So my only complaints about the new bag are aesthetic ones: I liked the matte look and feel of the old bag better, the dog's expression on the new bag kind of freaks me out, and the zip-lock zipper on the new bag doesn't align correctly so I had to pour the new treats into the old bag to keep them fresh. But I'm happy to say that the new bag does NOT alter the fact that this is my favorite training treat out there. They're healthy, small, soft (can be cut into smaller tid-bits with a razor blade or sharp knife for calorie conscious trainers), can be carried in my pocket without making a mess, and fit perfectly in the Mannersminder Remote Reward Training System that I use for training.

Purchased it as a recommended training treat by a friend. A few hours after ingestion my 4 month old puppy sick and he repeatedly threw up overnight, multiple times. His diet had not been changed and we crate him whenever we are not home, so the treats are the only difference he's had in his diet.

Really wanted to like this, but they went into the garbage and we will stick to Blue Buffalo treats.

These Zukes treats have been great, I've used me with both if my dogs in obedience classes. They are small and moist but not too moist where they crumble. I was confident in this products ingredients, as I try my best to make sure my dogs eat as healthy as possible. I learned that Zukes has recent been sold to Purina. My natural pet food store in town won't be purchasing these any longer because the quality of he product cannot be verified. I'm not sure if Amazons stock is still from Zukes or the new owner Purina. Sad customer now looking for a new treat.
