5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written, fairly witty bagatelle..., October 3, 2007
This review is from: Zuleika Dobson (Paperback)
The fact that I am the first person to review this book on Amazon is unsurprising. Beerbohm is not exactly a household name in this country (or, perhaps, any country), and this book is so quaint and point-specific that contemporary readers might not have the patience to reach the finish-line.

Zuleika Dobson is #59 on the MLA 100, and while it deserves a spot on the list for its intellectual rigor and literary sophistication, its precedence over Of Human Bondage is another reason to question the list's methodology and composition.

Beerbohm presents nothing earth-shattering in this book...it is a satirical work--bordering on burlesque--reflective of the author's Classical erudition and aristocratic bent. It also contains a few good (not great) one-liners.

It's a worthwhile book, and I recommend it in a half-hearted way. No need to rush out and get a copy, but if you do find yourself with it, it won't be a time-waster. And, if you manage to finish it, good for you.
