5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute delight October 13, 2011

I'd never heard of this book before I made the resolution to read through the Modern Library list of 100 greatest novels (it came in at 59).

Originally published in 1911, Beerbohm's only novel is a absolute delight to read. The titular Zuleika visits her grandfather, a Warden at an Oxford college. She is a professional magician, but more known for her beauty than for her skill. Immediately men at Oxford begin to fall in love with her. The most important is the Duke of Dorset, a paragon of aristocratic virtue and a shining star at his college. He's never been in love before and his reaction to it is rather extreme. Honestly, the plot isn't all that complex and is even a little silly. What makes the book is the wit and pure talent with words that Beerhohm brings to it. The Duke's proposal speech is one of the most purely pleasurable things I'd read for a long time.

Reading this book felt a bit like eating candy - it's just so enjoyable and lighthearted, even though the subject matter is - at least in outline - pretty dark. Beerhohm has such a way with words. Even though this is his only novel, I'm looking forward to reading more of his other writing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Depressing February 13, 2013

Utterly depressing book. I struggled to finish it. No redeeming characters, except possibly the gargoyles.
Hopefully it is not a true reflection of the values of that time period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roman Emperors, Mass Suicide, A Yankee Sexpot, Oh My! November 28, 2012

The "Incomparable Max" has given us the eulogy for Edwardian England. What adjectives to use, witty, urbane, sophisticated, gentlemanly? Only he could lampoon the "herd mentality" of Oxford under graduates affected dons etc. without the spite and rancor of later day writers i.e. Holden Caulfield, Catcher in the Rye, who have written about youth.

Is it a profound book, no, but it does hold up a picture of his times which is not all that different from today. Read the book in small doses and you will apply a balm to the wounds inflicted upon you by contemporary attitudes and culture.

I wonder what he would have thought of e-books and the ridiculously small cost they require to have access to such an outstanding work?

I also fear though, that he would disapprove of my use of exclamation points, but would chide me in a gentle manner.
