The "Incomparable Max" has given us the eulogy for Edwardian England. What adjectives to use, witty, urbane, sophisticated, gentlemanly? Only he could lampoon the "herd mentality" of Oxford under graduates affected dons etc. without the spite and rancor of later day writers i.e. Holden Caulfield, Catcher in the Rye, who have written about youth.
Is it a profound book, no, but it does hold up a picture of his times which is not all that different from today. Read the book in small doses and you will apply a balm to the wounds inflicted upon you by contemporary attitudes and culture.
I wonder what he would have thought of e-books and the ridiculously small cost they require to have access to such an outstanding work?
I also fear though, that he would disapprove of my use of exclamation points, but would chide me in a gentle manner.
