Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-8-What should be a fascinating and informative history and description of the Zuni is marred by stiff and, at times, disjointed writing. The excellent-quality, full-color photographs and black-and-white illustrations are attractive, but some of their captions are vague and potentially confusing. The one map is colorful but of little use to readers: Chaco Canyon, an important geographical area for this tribe, is not shown; however, six branches of the Apache tribe are noted-though they are not mentioned in the text. The authors do cite Thomas Canby's piece on "The Anasazi" (National Geographic, Nov., 1982), which has excellent coverage of the subject and is frequently available at garage sales for a quarter.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cursory look at the Zunis, November 16, 2004
This book is part of the Franklin Watts Library. The library contains many other introduction books of various Indians including the Apaches and Navajos.

To know what to expect from the book we must know something of the authors. Katherine Doherty is a librarian in a two-year technical collage. Craig Doherty is an English teacher in a high school. They lived on the Zuni Indian Reservation for five years.

The book is broken down into:
Zuni Prehistory
The coming of the Europeans
Social and Political Organization
Religion and beliefs
Daily Life
Crafts
Zuni Today

There are color photos and sketches to depict the important points.
One photo is of Two Modern Zuni girls dresses to participate in the Gallup, New Mexico, Intertribal Ceremonial. I particularly noticed the head dress has caricatures of Dragonflies. A significant part of the culture.
