Product Description

Although he is most widely recognized as a Master Bladesmith, Bob Kramer is also an expert on sharpening. In that spirit, he has collaborated with Zwilling to create the Kramer by Zwilling sharpening collection. In order to maximize the performance and safety of any knife, it is very important that the edge be properly cared for. Retooling your knives' edges by hand may seem daunting to a beginner, but with Kramer's help many describe the experience as relaxing and gratifying. Sturdy, easy to use, and adjustable to fit various sink sizes, this bamboo whetstone sink bridge is built to create an ideal working station for sharpening knives. It will make whetting, sharpening, and cleaning easy for the master and simple for the novice.

I bought this sink bridge because the design was simple and the bamboo construction seemed warmer and nicer than some of the other metal contraptions out there. I was also happy to see that it was advertised as being made in Japan. When I received it, I was very disappointed to see "MADE IN CHINA" printed on the box.

The sink bridge itself looks decent. The joinery, milling and finish of the bamboo parts are clean. The hardware, however, is pretty cheap and poorly designed for this application. The phillips screws spin freely, the wingnuts are tiny and weak, and the washers that bear against the moving parts of the bridge are smooth and don't provide enough friction for holding the bridge or the stone in place. Tightening the bridge in the sink requires two hands and a screwdriver, which makes it difficult to generate enough pressure against the sink walls to keep it steady. This flaw might have been mitigated with some rubber grip material on the surfaces that touch the sink but none is present. There's only a small strip on each foot for use on the counter. It might work in this capacity, but I purchased a sink bridge, not a stone holder, so I won't comment on countertop use.

With a little work, the bridge may still be usable. At the very least, I would need to add some captive screws, larger knurled knobs and maybe some star washers along with rubber grippers on the sink bearing surfaces to keep it steady. The potential for a working bridge that actually looks nice is the only reason it's getting two stars.

This is nice, it fits large stones (Less than 11 inches), which is rare. BUT dang sliding wood pieces are bogus suggest you buy some wood glue or you will get mad fast, but with wood glue and a small (4$) clamp you are in business boys.

Saw this block in a knife sharpening video online. Love the way it fits over the sink. There are other stones that fit into the slats if the block, so if you buy the block and buy another manufacturers stones you'll save $$.
