Unit didn't work. Power light came on, but no link activity or connectivity on any port. Tested using known good lines. May update review if I replace this unit with another one that works.

UPDATE: I have now received a replacement unit, and it works fine. I have adjusted my rating to disregard the DOA and reflect the otherwise excellent price-performance value that this switch represents. My sample size and the number of reviews to date don't justify any solid conclusions about quality control. But if you add in the reviews on another major vendor site to the ones found here at Amazon, they now reflect 2 DOA's out of 26 switches reviewed, and several of those reviews actually were for a different ZyXel switch model. While that's a small sample size, that's a higher DOA rate on the GS1100-16 than we should be seeing. Caveat emptor.

My old 8 port switch was full, and I had spliced in another 4 port to take up the slack, which seemed silly. When the old one failed, I decided to up things 2^(n+1) and go for a 16 port ;)

It doesn't draw much power at all, and powers down the internal circuitry for any group of four ports that aren't being used, which is definitely awesome and green.

Even better, this switch departs from the standard consumer crap where the indicator lights just slowly blink in a steady on-off pattern when there is traffic to a given port. This one does it right, the lights are steady on when connected, and just blink off super-fast when there's a packet. So you can actually get a loose impression of the intensity of the network saturation of each individual port quite well. Which is as it should be. I hate the tendency of modern cheap switches to just activate some sort of 'half second on, half second off' blinking pattern, regardless of whether it's passing one packet a second, or a thousand. Here, you can tell up to a point, as the light flashes off faster and faster, until it becomes half-bright from the speed (below the hz of human visual recognition). Very nice, and something I've long missed from most modern networking gear.

I purchased this switch to power 4 Hikvision cameras for my home security and the unit has performed flawlessly.

The moment you open the package, you know that is is quality item - very sturdy build with metal body and attention to detail at every angle.

The first 4 ports clearly marked as PoE capable. The front also features IEEE802.3az ON/Off button - to enable energy efficient Ethernet. The switch supports 802.3at 'PoE Plus' standard which provides double the power- up to 30W per port. Keep in mind, though, that the total budget of the switch is 75 W - so if you equipment draws 30 W on two ports then there will be only 15 W left for the other 2 ports. My cameras, tough, draw no more than 8 W max.

The back of the unit has an on/of switch.

The power supply is external with a proprietary connector: a 4-prong plug. The power adapter brick is pretty big - a laptop size.(about 5"x2"x1) and uses detachable mickey-mouse power cord

The bottom of the switch has holes for wall mounting

The RJ-45 ports are on the front of the unit and have 2 LEDs each to indicate 100 (yellow) or 1GB (green) connection. PoE indicator LEDs are located also on the front but to the left of all ports and light up if providing power - I find this setup very logical and easy to read and interpret.

I'm using this switch to power
DS-2532F-I - mini dome
DS-2CD2132-I - small dome 2 axis
DS-2CD2732F-IS - varifocal dome

and very happy with preference and features.

This item is small (16-port model), quiet, and easy to use. I'm very pleased with its performance as well. Higher-end network cards will connect at full duplex for a nice bonus.

If you are working on a project like me that you wanted a rack-mount switch, please take notice that this is deeper than most wall-mount racks. Therefore, I had to flush-mount this on the wall, rather than put it in the rack. Easily solvable if you buy a vertical hanging rack rather than an ordinary one. So if that's your plan, please take the depth of the unit into account.

This is a nice, inexpensive switch. We were upgrading from an 8-port for more expansion room on a secondary equipment rack. The unit has been running without any problems since we installed several weeks ago. We have seen good speed performance and reliability with this unit. For the price, it's hard to beat.

I purchased 2 of these and one of them had a high pitch squeal to it that was driving me crazy. I sent that one back for an RMA and the one I returned doesn't have a squeal. Don't accept the squeal, it's not normal and means there is a dry cap in there somewhere that's bound to fail over time.

Needed to get gigabit across a room, so i gave my girlfriend's sector a 5 port gigabit, and bought this to replace a 16 port SMC fast ethernet switch.

Glad i did it! SSD to SSD over the gigabit link is really fast, as it should be.

The ports are really close together, so if you're wiring this up make sure you put the bottom plugs in before you fill the top ports. Unless you're rack mounting this, in which case it shouldn't matter.

I've currently filled 10 ports with no issues.

This unit runs silent!

There's an on/off switch on the back, as well. Dunno why that's useful, but it is a consumer grade switch.

All in all this was worth the price!
