5.0 out of 5 stars simply the best for parmesan
I bought my first about seven years ago and when the handle finally broke lately (from lots and lots of use), I was shocked that I had trouble finding it in the stores. Not sure why my standard cookware stores (like William Sonoma, let alone Target!) didn't carry it. I bought my original at William Sonoma. WS had a different one I bought which turned out to be useless...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very good for people with small hands
I found it was easy to take apart and clean, but using it is a little bit awkward. In order to create enough pressure to grate quickly, I have to hold it higher up than it was designed (because my hands are smaller/weaker than it was designed for?) If I hold it like designed, the cheese isn't pressed into the grater as well and it takes a very long time to grate. This is...

5.0 out of 5 stars simply the best for parmesan, May 12, 2007
This review is from: Zyliss 11370 Classic Rotary-Style Cheese Grater (Kitchen)
I bought my first about seven years ago and when the handle finally broke lately (from lots and lots of use), I was shocked that I had trouble finding it in the stores. Not sure why my standard cookware stores (like William Sonoma, let alone Target!) didn't carry it. I bought my original at William Sonoma. WS had a different one I bought which turned out to be useless for parmesan and it cost $8 more than the Zyliss I ultimately found and bought. It does the job for parmesan - grates finely and evenly. easy to clean. good for any of the harder cheeses and you can use it at the table. highly recommend it. I ordered it online.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice little grater, March 24, 2007

The only problem I have with this is that it doesn't come with several different grating sizes... it only shreds finely, not coarsely. But otherwise, I like the detachable handle and the ease of use. Also, it's not good at all for softer cheeses, such as cheddar or mozzarella. However, it is easy to use and easy to clean (in dishwasher or by hand).

If I hold it like designed, the cheese isn't pressed into the grater as well and it takes a very long time to grate. This is my first parmesan grater of this style, so I don't know if other brands would have the same problem or not for me. I imagine it would easier for people with bigger/stronger hands.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't be deceived by all the good reviews, November 2, 2009

This review is from: Zyliss 11370 Classic Rotary-Style Cheese Grater (Kitchen)
The price is right on this cheese grater, but the performance is below sub-par. I'm no Popeye, but I'm a 6' 190lb guy with a solid grip and this cheese grater makes me feel like a pip-squeak. If a man of my size can rock-climb, do pull-ups, wield power tools, etc. it shouldn't feel like I need to "train" my forearms to extract even a trace of reasonable performance out of this item. Dull blades on the shredder wheel and a non-optimized handle angle make the user have to continually re-orient the grater while in operation so as to maintain a consistent "performance" (a word I use loosely here). Woe-betide the poor soul who wishes to grate anything firm, like a well-aged pecorino or chocolate straight from the fridge - this grater will provide you with a supremely ungratifying smattering of flecks - not the ample and satisfying shower of material the user so hopes to spread liberally over their chosen dish while (in most instances) still piping hot. So why two stars? The price is right, and it's easy to clean. But truth be told, I wouldn't even give this thing as a gift to an Iron Chef opponent.

We had our last cheese grater for a long time and finally had to replace it after it got chewed up by our dog! While this one did not have 5-star reviews it seemed to have the most positive reviews. I would give it 5-stars if it grated cheese by itself! Despite the fact that is doesn't, it is actually a very nice cheese grater, and much more effortless than the previous one we had. I would recommend it - and this comes from a very frequent parmesan cheese grater!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just like at a restaurant, October 23, 2007
This review is from: Zyliss 11370 Classic Rotary-Style Cheese Grater (Kitchen)
The Zyliss has been everything we hoped for. It grates parmesan right at the table with just a little elbow grease. It's strong and the fresh grated cheese is soooo much better than the supermarket product.

Here's why this cheese grater is awful:
- The swivel handle is too close to where you hold the grater, so there is no clearance; you can't rotate it freely without hitting the hand that's holding the grater

- You have to put a lot of pressure on the handle to squeeze the cheese against the grating barrel; it's very hard to do this because the design doesn't give you much leverage

- Bits of cheese end up getting stuck in the barrel and going to waste

- I saw something similar to the Oxo Good Grips Box Grate at a restaurant and I think it's a much better choice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Limited Versatility, May 18, 2010

I didn't realize how important it was to be able to change out the wheel until I was limited to just this one, fine grating wheel. Also, only one end of the grating wheel is open which is conducive to clogging if using moist cheese (cheddar for example).

2.0 out of 5 stars Zyliss cheese grater...., November 25, 2010
This review is from: Zyliss 11370 Classic Rotary-Style Cheese Grater (Kitchen)
This is an ok cheese grater for soft or semi soft cheese, but it is too difficult to handle for hard cheeses which is what I needed a cheese grater for...maybe if the handle were longer, or if I had three hands....
