2.0 out of 5 stars Good design except CORROSION of scoop
Had two. Current one just like the first one is seriously corroded. Scoop surface appears to be chrome but not. If it is aluminum the anodizing breaks down. A different brand that was aluminum had the same problem. My guess is anodized aluminum not suitable.

We've been through 4 different ice cream scoops over the past few years, and haven't really been satisfied with one until now. This scoop is fantastic!

The stand-out feature for me is the ability to scoop really hard ice cream. We keep our freezer set at 0 degrees for food presevation, but premium ice creams are rock hard at that temperature. But I'm too impatient to wait for the ice cream to soften!

The zyliss has two features that make it better at scooping hard ice cream:

1. The shape of the handle -- this is a scoop that you can really productively bear down on. There's a nice edge to push against with your thumb, and the scoop is aligned so that a downward thrust is very effective at scooping. Many scoops fail by providing nothing to push down against (leaving one trying to grasp the handle very hard to hold on) or having a scoop that requires a sideways (instead of downward) scooping motion.

2. The "beak" of the scoop -- it's almost sharp, and helps cut through the ice cream and any embedded goodies. However, it's not pointy in the way that some are, and won't accidentally pierce the side of the container.

Now, it doesn't magically scoop hard ice cream- it still requires significant force. What's different is that this scoop actually lets one use a lot of force!

The only downside is that we've found it's not completely dishwasher safe. After several weeks of use, we started getting tiny corrosion spots in the scoop bowl. This has been true for *every* scoop we've ever tried, so we've resolved just to handwash it, which isn't a big deal.

Generally Zyliss makes quality kitchen tools. This has serious flaw. Wrote them and they offered a new one free if I sent the old one in. Not worth the time and cost. The corrosion is serious over time. Maybe a teflon coating?

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cadillac of Ice Cream Scoops, August 11, 2005
This review is from: Zyliss 71372 Metal Ice-Cream Scoop with Ergonomic Plastic Handle, White (Kitchen)
Yes, this would be for the serious ice cream scooper. An ergonomic handle, in a choice of fab colors-among them orange and pink, a nice heft to it, and the ability to make perfect scoops that do not require a lot of effort to get the ice cream into your bowl. Very good quality and much more than I expected. This one is built to last! Highly recommend it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Metallic surface wears away, March 11, 2010

I just added two images, so check them out. They show how poor the surface is. I own quite a few Zyliss products and after starting out as a big fan of them and having used them for a couple years, I've realized that some of the products, including this one are poor quality due to the cheap matte metallic finish that wears away with repeated use & washing. I always use scrubbers intended for non-stick pans, but this wear still occurs. And who knows what kinds of chemicals are in the cheap finish they use? Looks great out of the box, but they show their age before long. I notice this particularly on this scoop and on their garlic press. If Zyliss utilized the same design, but simply used stainless steel, I'd be thrilled and would give 5-stars. For comparison, their pizza slicer and peelers ARE stainless steel and are fantastic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Scoop, February 27, 2006

I am very pleased with the scoop. It is sturdy, heavy and dishwasher safe. It does not cut through super-hard ice cream as well as it claims to, but it does a great job otherwise. We replaced a higher-end scoop (the kind with the chemicals in the handle that are supposed to soften hard ice cream) and we like this one even better.

5.0 out of 5 stars UltaScoop!, January 15, 2005
This review is from: Zyliss 71372 Metal Ice-Cream Scoop with Ergonomic Plastic Handle, White (Kitchen)
My search for perfection in a ice-cream scoop may have come to an end. Over the years I have tried many an ice cream scoop in many a tub of frozen ice-cream. To date none have come close to the Zyliss scoop in either ease of use or style. (The solid construction looks quite nice) This is the only style of scoop I have found that is superior to the standard metal ice-cream parlor scoop. If you like ice-cream this a must!

I would like to add that after a year of use the metal is starting to flake a little... but if you know scoops, it seems to be bound to happen. I just scrub it off good and it is still my best scoop around.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overrated - it's just an ice cream scoop, December 31, 2005
This review is from: Zyliss 71372 Metal Ice-Cream Scoop with Ergonomic Plastic Handle, White (Kitchen)
I bought this to pad an order recently. At the time, it was perhaps the highest-rated ice cream scoop on Amazon. From some of the reviews, I would have thought that this scoop has near-magical qualities. Now, when I fall in love with a product, I'll rave about it as much as the next person; I'm not as cynical as this review may sound. But come on, folks--this is just an ice cream scoop.

The good:
Heavy duty (as long as a finish doesn't wear off, I imagine I'll never have to throw this away)

The bad:
Nothing

Some say that you don't have to heat this up. They claim that it cuts through the hardest ice cream, and somehow the ice cream simply falls off the scoop. I've found this claim to be overstated.

I do not recommend avoiding this ice cream scoop. But if you have one that's in decent shape, don't buy this based on the claims of some of these reviewers. It's a good scoop, but it's not magical.

Like an old-time scoop that grandma might have. But this one has a unique scoop design that has the benefits of a blade and a scoop in one. Perfect weight and balance as well. Very well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Found the greatest scoop ever..., October 13, 2004
This review is from: Zyliss 71372 Metal Ice-Cream Scoop with Ergonomic Plastic Handle, White (Kitchen)
I just bought my Zyliss Ice Cream Scoop last night but it's already seen some use! I took ice cream out of our deep freeze (which we keep around 5 degrees Fahrenheit below zero) and was able to scoop my own ice cream! Usually my hubby has to scoop our ice cream, I'm just not strong enough...I can scoop my own now! It claims to be dishwasher safe but I have been handwashing ours right after use. Highly recommended! I plan to try a Zyliss Rubber spatula and also maybe their whisk, I love the handles, they're so comfy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for bowls, not good for cones, August 13, 2007

Pros:
- Cuts through hard ice cream easily
- Excellent for dolloping out bowls of ice cream quickly
- Feels okay in the hand

Cons:
- Has a really hard time packing ice cream into and on top of the brown sugar cones you buy at the supermarket (a regular soup spoon still works great)
- Doesn't release ice cream cleanly (ice cream left on the scoop, need a spoon to get it off)
- Big and has some weight

Summary:
- Good for scooping out ice cream into bowls. Not for cones. Big and a little heavy.

UPDATE: Got used to the scoop. For cones, you just need to focus on scooping small pieces and pushing them onto the cone in different ways. And work over the sink. With small pieces, the ice cream also comes off the scoop more easily -- it gets harder when the scoop gets cold. I would update my rating to 5 stars if I could.
