Easy to clean.

I like the squeeze hold handle design better than my old one which used to bend quite a bit on hard cheese.
Bulldog_guy
I use it only on hard cheese because I love freshly grated parmesan and other hard cheeses.

I bought my first about seven years ago and when the handle finally broke lately (from lots and lots of use), I was shocked that I had trouble finding it in the stores. Not sure why my standard cookware stores (like William Sonoma, let alone Target!) didn't carry it. I bought my original at William Sonoma. WS had a different one I bought which turned out to be useless for parmesan and it cost $8 more than the Zyliss I ultimately found and bought. It does the job for parmesan - grates finely and evenly. easy to clean. good for any of the harder cheeses and you can use it at the table. highly recommend it. I ordered it online.

The only problem I have with this is that it doesn't come with several different grating sizes... it only shreds finely, not coarsely. But otherwise, I like the detachable handle and the ease of use. Also, it's not good at all for softer cheeses, such as cheddar or mozzarella. However, it is easy to use and easy to clean (in dishwasher or by hand).

I grated cheese for many years with a regular box grater. It was always a pain, so i usually just bought pre-shredded Parmesan. No more!

What i like about this machine:
-Comes with a "fine" grating drum. Some other graters sell multiple drums. I was ok with the one drum, because i generally want my cheese grated finely. If you want a bigger drum, i don't think i would buy this item. I can't seem to find a "course" drum on amazon.
-Handle is comfortable. I have no issues grating 3-4 platefuls of cheese for people (and i'm not a big burly guy either).
-The lever that holds the cheese does a good job. The counter fits the drum, so you can get almost all of the cheese grated before you encounter problems (see below).
-Easy to clean. Just turn the handle counter clockwise while holding the drum still and it pops right off. Then the drums slides right out. Just put it all the dishwasher. Simple.
-Holds a good size chunk of cheese.

Things to watch out for:
-You have to press very firmly on the lever mechanism with your left thumb, otherwise you'll find that the drum just spins and pushes the cheese up. BUT - i don't find it particularly uncomfortable.
-When you get toward the end of the piece of cheese, it can slip through the gap between the drum and the main body. Means you can't quite grate everything.
PRO TIP: Because of that last item, i like to cut triangles. Put the triangle "point up". That way when you get toward the end, you don't end up with a long piece of ungrated cheese. Just a small sliver. Then just throw that piece on whatever it is you're eating.

Also, the grater fits in a regular sandwich size ziploc. So if you don't feel like cleaning the grater every day, you can slip it in there and put it in the fridge, cheese and all.

We had our last cheese grater for a long time and finally had to replace it after it got chewed up by our dog! While this one did not have 5-star reviews it seemed to have the most positive reviews. I would give it 5-stars if it grated cheese by itself! Despite the fact that is doesn't, it is actually a very nice cheese grater, and much more effortless than the previous one we had. I would recommend it - and this comes from a very frequent parmesan cheese grater!!!

The Zyliss has been everything we hoped for. It grates parmesan right at the table with just a little elbow grease. It's strong and the fresh grated cheese is soooo much better than the supermarket product.

I love this grater. I had previously owned the Pampered Chef brand and found it indispensable for grating fresh parmesan. It lasted a few years but now I am going back to what I know to be a good quality brand, Zyliss. (My first Zyliss garlic press lasted 15 years!).

If you read the negative reviews where people say you can't grate soft cheeses... I agree. But to me that is not a negative aspect of this product. This grater is designed for hard cheeses. You can use the box type or the large flat type for softer cheeses. But to get a nice fine grate of parmesan or romano, this is just the utensil that you need.

I found it was easy to take apart and clean, but using it is a little bit awkward. In order to create enough pressure to grate quickly, I have to hold it higher up than it was designed (because my hands are smaller/weaker than it was designed for?) If I hold it like designed, the cheese isn't pressed into the grater as well and it takes a very long time to grate. This is my first parmesan grater of this style, so I don't know if other brands would have the same problem or not for me. I imagine it would easier for people with bigger/stronger hands.
