5.0 out of 5 stars By George, they've got it!
I was critical of the Zyliss chopper (the cheaper model) in an earlier review, but now, after several weeks of using this one, I feel I need to give Zyliss its props for having got it right. Well, this is probably the best little chopper out there. The blades are designed better than the others I've seen, it's extremely easy to clean thanks to the butterflying casing, and it has pretty good ergonomics. All the staff at kitchen stores seem to love them, too.

That being said, I really don't think it's a very useful tool. The chopping cup is extremely small,...

I was critical of the Zyliss chopper (the cheaper model) in an earlier review, but now, after several weeks of using this one, I feel I need to give Zyliss its props for having got it right. Although herbs sometimes still need a little extra poking and prodding to get the mince right, on the whole, this model is so much better than the other that it's remarkable to think they're manufactured by the same company. Not only are the blades sharper and the plunger easier to depress, but cleanup is streamlined by virtue of the hinged sides on the body of the chopper. When you're finished, just pop all the detachable bits into some hot, soapy water, then grasp the sides of the chopper and separate them like wings on some huge post-modern insect. The whole blade is laid bare for rinsing, and fast drying time.

I'm really impressed, but I wonder why Zyliss bothers with the cheaper model when this is so obviously superior. Anyway, you need one of these for mincing and chopping. Honest.

4.0 out of 5 stars An improved version!, November 18, 2001

This Zyliss Chopper is easier to clean than its non-dishwasher safe alternative. The big plus here is that it opens for cleaning AND is dishwasher safe. (Now, cleaning that very sharp blade is actually a possibility.) I think it's often a better choice than a food processor because you have more control over how finely you chop the food.

Sometimes, though, for real precision, I'd still use a basic old knife. But for saving time for regular chopping, this product helps out!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Quality, January 10, 2002

After owning Zyliss's other chopper and replacing it with this one has shown me once again that Zyliss works hard to keep up with the demands of customers. They improved the over all comfort first of all by adding rubber grips to the sides which is a great safety feature. The biggest improvement is now the sides open up to give you the access you need to clean the blades properly. Safety and quality was in mind when they remade this chopper. It comes with a chopping mat and has different colors to chose from. Its a few dollars more but well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Get It!, February 5, 2002

If you're thinking about this chopper just get it. I've used it many times and I'm so glad I bought it. It's a great time saver and very, very easy to clean. The sides open up very wide but be careful, the blades are sharp. It's made very well and I don't see it ever breaking as long as I take care of it. Even if it did, I love it so much that I would buy another in a heartbeat.

That being said, I really don't think it's a very useful tool. The chopping cup is extremely small, so if you want to dice an entire onion you would probably have to cut it into a few pieces and do it in a few steps. It also really isn't any quicker than doing it by hand, at least not if you don't want to chop anything too finely. I could definitely dice an onion quicker with a good sharp knife, and my culinary skills are pretty limited. I was also surprised at how much effort I had to put into it in order to ensure that the blades penetrated all the way through to the bottom of the cup. I think thats because the cup is so small that when you have a lot of stuff in it it tends to clog up the blades and press against the sides of the cup, creating a lot of friction. For most aplications a knife is a better alternative.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lives up to its advertisement, June 22, 2002
By A Customer
Zyliss makes excellent, quality, dependable products. They last, they're comfortable to use, and they're reliable. I would recommend anything by this manufacturer. The comfort food chopper is indeed handy. It keeps the chopped food in a contained area, chops food into small pieces quickly, and actually is fairly easy to clean. If you're a purist, however (as I am), you might prefer the old-fashioned chef's-knife method on a wooden cutting board. If you prefer gadgets, I recommend the food chopper. It's particularly useful for chopping onions if you're sensitive to their odor.

3.0 out of 5 stars Zyliss Comfort Food Chopper Really is Comfortable to Use!, July 30, 2003
I like this chopper. The "pusher" handle is easy to push down and springs back up easily. The blades are extremely sharp and the chopper is easy to clean. The sides of the main body of the chopper folds out so you can get all the little bits of chopped food that usually get stuck in gadgets like these. I find the lid for the 1-cup sized container that fits at the bottom of the chopper a nice touch as it allows me to save any leftover chopped food for another time. I also like the option of just chopping food directly onto my cutting board by leaving the container off. I suggest that you get any one of the colors, or the transparent one, but steer away from the white one which doesn't allow you to see what your chopping. All the colored ones are actually transparent plastic with color inserts making it easier to see what you're doing. By the way, I bought the transparent one. The only reason I didn't give this chopper 5 stars is because of the price...it should have cost half of what was charged...afterall...it's only a manual chopper, not an electric one, and the main body is plastic, not glass like most choppers.

the zyliss food chopper is not what its cracked up to be!the cutting blades are spaced too far apart, this allows chunks of onions, peppers etc. to lodge between them.when we buy something like this we expect to save time, dislodging stuck items defeats the purpose.if you're willing to cut the items to be chopped into smaller pieces this item will work for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars probably the most used gadget in my kitchen, December 8, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Zyliss Comfort Food Chopper, Blue (Kitchen)
I have had a lot of different choppers and not been pleased with any. This is the BEST! I use it daily, from garlic to onions to nuts.. you name it.. it goes in there. When I'm done I disassemble and throw it in the dishwasher. I have two and have not had a problem with either. If you want things in big chunks, you only press the plunger a couple times.. really fine, keep going. It does a wonderful job and no kitchen, in my opinion, should be without one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea but very poor design, May 23, 2003

It is true that the Zyliss is one of the easiest to clean choppers on the market but the device is very easy to break. There is a small flimsy piece of plastic that prevents chopped food from moving past the blades into the back of the unit. After 3 uses this piece broke and is now completely useless. I cannot find a replacement. I bought this unit because all AMAZON reviews were positive, but this is one time that the reviews were wrong. Please save yourself some money and buy something else.
