No kitchen should be without one,
By A Customer
This review is from: Zyliss Comfort Salad Spinner with Storage Lid, White (Kitchen)
Have had two of these salad spinners for several years, and hands down, they are the best I have ever used. You can easily wash and spin a full head of lettuce due to its large capacity. It only takes about 3 pulls and your lettuce is dry - the centrifugal force is so strong it actually piles the lettuce against the sides and leaves a big empty spot in the center of the bowl. I also like that I can turn the lid over on my counter and place the inner basket on it while I am rinsing the leaves before I spin them. The extra water bunches up on the lid instead of my counter. The reason I only gave this product a 4 instead of a 5 is that the string on one of my spinners broke in two places, making it inoperable. The lid is impossible to get apart to replace the string, so I will have to purchase another lid. I also recently purchased an Oxo Good Grips spinner and took it back because it just wasn't as good as this one. The leaves of my lettuce were quite a bit wetter and I didn't get that centrifugal force effect like with the Zyliss. The Oxo also has a large protusion sticking into the basket from the lid, so you can't turn it over and put your inner basket on it while you are washing the greens.

The best salad spinner ever,

I know that salad spinners are not the top sexy item in every cook's kitchen, but this one is the best I've ever used. My mother has had one for years, and when I moved into an apartment of my own, I bought a different brand and could definitely see a difference. Hands down, Zyliss wins and I need one of my own. It spins smoothly and makes even gritty spinach clean. Plus, remove the top, and you have a decent-looking salad bowl.

excellent tool for the kitchen,

I use a popular vegetable wash for salads and had a hard time removing suds from greens this device is so good and removes all suds and drys greens perfectly its better than any other spinner I have tried. It has never come apart and sprayed all the contents over the room and I can use the outer bowl as my server I rarely recommend products but this spinner is great by the way I bought mine through a catalog and paid a lot more than the price listed here.

does what it's meant to,

This is a solid, good quality salad spinner that works perfectly. The string spin action is easy, efficient and fun, so you've got a good chance of getting the kids involved in cleaning lettuce and herbs. The inside bowl doubles as a colander, which is useful. However it's quite bulky, and can't be stacked, so it takes up too much room in my limited cupboard space. Unlike another reviewer, who said it was easy to clean, I find that bits of lettuce often get stuck and that it can be a nuisance to clean. Having said that, it's still a good salad spinner.

Zyliss spins to the top of my list of kitchen must haves,

If you're a salad consumer, even just an occasional one, the Zyliss salad spinner is a must have. I couldn't begin to tell you the hours I spent washing, rinsing, draining and drying salad fixings, herbs, etc. prior to owning this. Now I just throw it in the zyliss basket, rinse it, and allow the water to drain thru the basket's holes. Then stick the basket in the clear bowl, put on the top, tug a few times, and VOILA,CLEAN, DRY & CRISP salad makings, virtually effortlessly. Your salad will stay fresher and crisper longer. So much so that I'm able to make a huge salad that will last our family several days and put it in the fridge for later use. When I take it out it's never soggy or limp as before. You won't be sorry with this product. I do have to mention one tiny downside. This product does not do well in the dishwasher. The heat will warp the basket making it unable to spin properly. But with all the time you save preparing the salad, what's a few seconds to wash it by hand??

Best Spinner on the Market!,

This review is from: Zyliss Comfort Salad Spinner with Storage Lid, Lime (Kitchen)
This is the best salad spinner I've ever used. I like to clean my lettuce as soon as I bring it home from the market and keep it in a Ziploc bag. When I need some for lunch or dinner, it's ready to go. This salad spinner spins the salad almost completely dry which helps the lettuce to last longer. It's very easy to operate. The other salad spinners I've had were very cumbersome to use. This one is not at all. The yoyo type action dries the lettuce greens twice as fast as the single action spinner types. The other wonderful feature is the large bowl that is part of the spinner. It holds several heads of shredded lettuce easily and looks great on the table. You won't be disappointed with this purchase!

Spin dry,

This was a Valentine's gift for my wife. She wondered how we got along without it. Spins salad very dry so that it stores well left over. Cleans up quickly. We do not use the storage lid as the bowl takes up a lot of fridge space. Use a small container. The life of the cord seems dependent on how you use the "yo-yo" process. Be gentle, it doesn't need a lot of force.

It works very well, but there's a better one to get,

If you're looking at salad spinners, you've probably narrowed it down to a Zyliss and an OXO. Well, with the Zyliss you're able to generate more speed, which is probably the best feature, and the Zyliss also comes with a separate lid so you can use it as tupperware (without the salad spinning insert.) The OXO, last I checked, didn't come with a separate lid. Now, the only problem with this model is that when you pull the string, it gets sucked back into the lid quite quickly. It has to do this to rewind itself so you can spin it yet again. This feature is the only thing I dislike about this model, HOWEVER, Zyliss fixed it in their next model, the "Zyliss Large Easy Spin Salad Spinner with Bonus Lettuce Knife, white/transparent" This model totally rocks and the pull string is much more comfortable. It uses a free-wheel system so the string doesn't suck your finger back into the lid.

Easy and fun with storage lid!,

When deciding to get a salad spinner I found myself deciding between this one and the OXO good grips. To me the main differences between the two are:1. The Oxo doesn't come with a storage lid. I find myself using the Zyliss to dry the lettuce, then I can either pour the lettuce into the bowl (taking the basket out) or just leave the basket in. Ragardless, what I can do in either case is place the storage lid on top to keep everything fresh until the next time I use it. The lid is an extra purchase for the Oxo. 2. The Zyliss is more fun (at least in my opinion). The movement is much like starting a lawnmower, yanking on the cord. The Oxo is more boring, pushing a single button. I don't have a dishwasher, so I can't provide input concerning which is better in the dishwasher, but I find washing the Zyliss in the sink to be a breeze.

Great multitasker, but not for sprouts,

This guy is huge, so expect for it to take up a lot of space; but its bane is also its boon, so its girth also makes it more versatile than some of its daintier competitors. The plastic bowl can be used to clean a moderate amount of greens (you can let the leaves of some of those dirtier edible plants--spinach, for example--just float on top and let the grit sink to the bottom) instead of a potentially germy sink. Its size also allows for more efficient drying; depending on how much you have in there, a few spins will suffice. The lid, as mentioned by another reviewer, can be used as a drip tray (nevertheless, I imagine getting the string wet can also weaken it over time). And the inner basket can be used as a colander in a pinch. The spinner will work wonders on herbs...basil in particular has a way of wilting on me within what seems like seconds, which is such a waste since I can only buy it fresh in bunches. But after washing it, spinning it, and sticking it in a plastic bag with a paper towel, I have fresh basil for at least a few days, which is fantastic since fresh herbs always make my food taste like I worked harder than I did. I also give a gentle spin to berries so I don't get too much liquid into my yogurt or cereal or whatever. One caveat: the other day, in a rare lapse of judgment (maybe not so rare), I tried drying some alfalfa sprouts in this. I bet you see where this is going. Ahem. Yes, those wiley little sprouts got stuck in the holes of the basket and it was a pain to clean (imagine something along the lines of trying to tweeze out every hair off your arm individually). In my defense, alfalfa sprouts retain a lot of water; it seemed like a good idea at the time. Stick with paper towels. One other note: my mom had something like this when I was a kid, and even when I was too young to help with anything else I could wash and spin the salad until it was dry as dirt. Spinning and making the whole bowl rock like a toppling top on the counter was wholesome fun! My mom would always give me credit for her fabulous salads. |
