I got this mainly because I have a really small kitchen, didn't have room any more kitchen gadgets, and didn't need an expensive steel mandoline for occasional use. I am so impressed with this "inexpensive" model. It's great! It does what it is designed for. Made quick and fun work of potatoes and onions. The instructions included aren't the greatest... (what the...) The unit doesn't unfold easily initially and the knob is a bit stiff until you get the hang of it. Like anything else, don't force it open; it's made of a good quality plastic but it's still plastic. The pusher is comfortable to use. Included is a translucent blade guard that I would suggest setting somewhere safe. I have a feeling I won't be folding this tool up and putting it away any time soon. I would highly recommend this.

This is hands down the BEST mandolin I've ever owned! Super easy to operate with a razor sharp blade that hasn't dulled in the two years of heavy use I've put it through. Bought one for my brother-in-law too and today my other brother-in-law was drooling over it as well. Guess what he's getting for Christmas? :)

the slicer is great for all veggies except for potatoes....it does not slice or make fries with potatoes, I think it's the blade, it's not a smooth blade therefore the potato will break

I have purchased at least a dozen mandolins of various designs and have been disappointed every time.

Pros:

Slices are even. 1 is transparent-thin, 2 is perfect for super-thin apple chips, 3 is ideal for squash `lasagna` noodles and 4 is ideal for that tomato slice on your veggie burger.

Folding design. Mandolin folds in half for easy storage.

Cons:

Plastic stains. Sliced one carrot and it was permanently stained. Even soaking in bleach water overnight could not remove it.

The blade is serrated. After only a few uses, I've noticed that the 'teeth' are uneven.

Too many cracks - hiding places for bacteria - very difficult to keep truly clean. Why, with modern technology, is it apparently impossible to design a seamless mandolin, with all smooth surfaces, easy to clean?

The upper plate (the surface just above the blade) does not lock into place, and often catches the food on the return trip for the next cut.

Conclusion:

If all you want to do is slice an occasional onion, etc. then this may work for you.

If you process veggies every day, like me, then you won't be happy with this design.

Returning.

Bought this based on the glowing reviews, but was disappointed. It slices harder veggies fairly well and uniform, but when I tried a tomato I ended up with ragged cuts and a big piece of skin and tomato meat that was what was left over (trailing edge) after the slicing. It generally cut the leading edge sort of well but the tailing edge of the slice was torn up. I see no reason to believe that it would do any better with HB eggs, celery, etc. Bought a Swissmar Borner V-1001 V-Slicer Plus Mandoline to try out as a replacement and BIG difference. Tomato slices, whether thick or thin came out beautifully and left over was the top of the tomato, cut clean. Sweet Potato sliced well for dehydrating. My goal in buyiing this was to have attractive food to set out for guests. This machine did not accomplish that.
Personal bonafides: I was a professional resort chef for 4 years (during college)and have 38 years worth of cooking and catering experience since. In catering, taste and appearance of food is mandatory (or you won't get a 2nd chance) and speed of preparation is very helpful.

Good things about it....It was relatively safe to store, especially if you saved the little plastic blade protector that it was shipped with. When folded, all blades were hidden and the unit was safe to handle. No storage on the unit for the safety shield however, so you had 2 pieces to store.

It's sharp, it's adjustable, and it's easy to clean. Beyond that, it has been a let down. It is difficult to unfold initially and makes a loud, breaking sound. That eventually went away. The first thing that actually broke was a platic folding support. It still works. The next thing that broke was one of the rivets that holds the blade on. Not sure why it broke off. Non-repairable.

This works very well and it is fun to produce such nicely sliced products. Four stars only because it is rather difficult to open and close.

I purchased the Zyliss Easy Slice Mandolin and to be honest there is nothing easy about it. I probably would not purchase it again and would not really recommend it to a friend. I think it would be better to pay more for a professional Mandolin.

This one did okay slicing potatos, carrots and onions, but it was hard to slice, the blade did not cut the food very well, which surprised me as the blade is very sharp, I cut myself just putting this together. I think also I would be happier with knife blades you can change out -- in fact, I thought I was ordering that model, so do not really know what happened -- evidently I clicked on the wrong one. It does make slicing go faster, just not quite what I had in mind. Aslo the thickness adjustment is not the best and does not get the thicker slices, the slices are actually in between 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch, not thick enough for some applications. I also do not like the way the food gripper has to ride on the ridges of the unit to work and is not more free form, it is awkward to use.

My wife has tried several different mandolins, but none of them sliced thin enough. The Zyliss really performs with paper thin slices that resulted in perfect gratin potatoes. It's easy to use and clean, and the guard keeps her fingers safe.

Description of the item says it will slice up to 1/2" thick. When you look at the box it only cuts up to 1/4" thick slices. Was disappointed with this as I'm looking for something that cuts thicker than the 1/4" for dehydrating fruits.
