Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered two CD set containing a pair of original albums from the Prog/Jazz/World music outfit: Zzebra (1975) and Panic (1976), both including bonus tracks. Zzebra was at the forefront of the mid-'70s Progressive/Afro/Jazz Rock/Funk movement and were not surprisingly created by an amalgamation of two highly rated bands (Dave Quincy from If and Loughty Amao from Osibisa). Add to that Liam Genockey, Steve Byrd and John McCoy (who later played together in Gillan) and you had a driving creative band. 22 tracks. Angel Air. 2010.

If you loved Dave Quincy's playing with If, here he is. But he only gets brief solos here. Same with the guitarist from If, Terry Smith I think his name was. And he was canned after the first disk. The main singer (I won't mention his name)on the first disk makes me give it a one star effort, as he is totally forgettable. The instrumentals are great, but the minute the singer starts, forget it, the sound becomes very dated and generic. Loughty Amao's singing, though, immediately brings me back to the greatness of Osibisa, with his reeds, percussion, etc.
You COULD buy this double CD and record one good five star CD of the best of progressive rock/jazz/African sounds, but the singer holds it down to a bland rock outing the rest of the time. He was asked to leave after the first record.
The second disk is much better, and although the new guitarist is no terry Smith, he is good, sort of a young Chris Spedding. And Jeff Beck plays a bit, too! If I had to choose between this or a Nucleus double CD, I'd take Nucleus, as the Zzebra is too exxpensive
