aXbo - Starting the "Good Morning" Revolution

Starting the day fresh and well-rested is the dream of many people the world over. With the aXbo Sleep Phase Alarm Clock, it's not just a dream, it's a good morning. Every day.

Boris Eis began studying waking habits and sleep phases in 1997 with a singular goal: to create an alarm clock that would wake users on time while making them feel as if they'd woken themselves naturally. Working with co-creator Axel Ferro, innovative designer Rouven Haas and teams of sleep scientists, Eis saw his labors come to fruition in 2006 with the world's first sleep phase alarm clock: aXbo.

With aXbo, the beginning of the day becomes a positive experience. The dream of all those who consistently get up on the wrong side of the bed has turned into a reality. aXbo has revolutionized the act of waking up, allowing you to start every day relaxed and in a good mood.

aXbo monitors your sleep phases to wake you at the right moment

aXbo Gives You a Good Morning Every Day

Wake Up On Time...Naturally

Everybody knows the pleasure of waking naturally in the morning and feeling wonderfully relaxed and rested, but traditional alarm clocks rarely allow for this. aXbo, the world's first sleep phase alarm clock, is designed to rouse you at your optimal awakening time during a light sleep phase. It's like waking with your inner clock.

Every person has their own individual sleep patterns and their own ideal moment to wake up. Both REM and deep sleeping phases are marked by almost no physical movement. As you pass from a deep sleeping phase into a REM phase or from a REM phase into a deep sleeping phase, your body becomes more active. The ideal moment to wake is near the end of one sleep phase and before the next one begins, the point when you are already almost awake. This is where aXbo comes in.

A small sensor, worn in a comfortable terry cloth wristband, registers movement and transmits that information to the aXbo. The clock's unique wake-up algorithm calculates your optimal awakening time by tracking your body movements and identifying your sleep phases. aXbo rouses you at the ideal moment within the 30 minutes before your requested wake-up time. Because the way aXbo works, it does not have a snooze button. If you forget to turn on the wristband or don't get up right when your wake-up melody sounds, aXbo will wake you at your requested wake-up time, just like a normal alarm clock.

You and your partner can both use aXbo
aXbo for Two

aXbo includes sensors and wristbands so that two people can use the clock at the same time and still be woken at their ideal moment. Each person sets their own wake-up time and chooses from one of six pleasant wake-up sounds. The aXbo clock registers and interprets movement for both users independently, just as if each had a personal alarm clock.

Soothing sounds lull you to sleep
Falling Asleep with aXbo

aXbo not only helps you wake up peacefully, it also helps you get to sleep easily. aXbo includes three specially designed "chillout" sounds from nature that will help you calm down and fall asleep. The sound and the display light automatically fade once you are sleeping. If you wake and need to see the time, you can turn on the light for a short period via the sensor in your wristband.

Good Mornings, Even Without Power

aXbo comes to you loaded with three rechargeable NiMh batteries and includes a plug-in power adapter. aXbo also includes internal surge-protection. If there is an electromagnetic surge the aXbo moves automatically from mains power to battery power, ensuring that you have a peaceful wake-up even without electricity. The Sleep Phase Alarm Clock can run for seven days on a single charge, making it the ideal travel companion.

aXbo's PowerNap feature helps you nap effectively
Good Mornings and Good Afternoons

Taking a midday nap can increase your productivity and elevate your mood. aXbo's PowerNap feature helps you find the ideal waking time not just in the morning but also during daytime naps. The aXbo PowerNap function works according to the same principles as the aXbo alarm. During a PowerNap, aXbo tracks your movements and calculates your ideal wake-up time without allowing you to enter the deep sleep phase that can leave you feeling groggy. Thanks to the PowerNap, you can overcome midday energy crashes. You will feel rested, more productive and ready to go in the afternoon.

aXbo Research Software – Information for Better Sleep

Connect the aXbo to your computer with the included USB cable and transfer your movement data to help discover which of your lifestyle choices resulted in a better night's sleep and a more peaceful awakening.

Stay up-to-date with the latest aXbo developments by using the aXbo Up2Date software to upload additional functions to your alarm clock. Up2Date also assists you with downloading new sound packages for your aXbo clock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes waking up easier, June 2, 2009
This review is from: aXbo Sleep Phase Alarm Clock-For Two-White Finish (Electronics)
I've had this product for over a year now and both my husband and I like it very much. I don't find that the aXbo is any more difficult to set than with a regular clock. I set it for the time that I would set a regular clock for, say 6:30, and realize that it could go off as early as 6:00.

By using the aXbo, we don't wake up in the middle of a deep sleep except on the rare occasion when we haven't moved in the 30 minutes prior to the alarm, causing it to use a buzzer instead of the alarm sound that I chose.

My husband travels often for business and has far more early mornings than I do (getting up before 5:30). On those nights he always uses the aXbo and has never had a problem with either not waking up or only waking up enough to turn off the alarm and then falling back asleep.

For us, this product has been well worth the money and I would definitely buy it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice way to wake up., July 24, 2009
This review is from: aXbo Sleep Phase Alarm Clock-For Two-White Finish (Electronics)
I've been using this alarm clock for around two years. It is very easy to set up and use. You just set it to the time when you need to be up and it wakes you up sometime in the 30 minutes previous when it detects that you are in a light sleep. It plays one of several selectable sounds to wake you. If you are in a deep sleep clear through the 30 minutes then it wakes you up with a buzzer, but I rarely wake up to that. I had no problem getting used to sleeping with the wristband on.
Before this clock, I very often slept through my alarm, or worse, dreamt that I woke up and tried to turn off the alarm except that I couldn't turn it off. I know, it's weird. Most of the time when this clock goes off, I feel like I was about to wake up anyway.
The two things that would make it absolutely perfect would be first, more control over the options (i.e. I would love to be able to set it to wake me up within an hour of the selected time.) The second thing would be if the wristbands vibrated when the alarm went off. I know that this would require occasional battery changes, but it would be worth it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, undesired 'handcuff' effect, June 27, 2010
This review is from: aXbo Sleep Phase Alarm Clock-For Two-White Finish (Electronics)
I bought this product about a year ago and have not been using it anymore for the last 8 months. Why not? It is a nice product for sure. Well designed and I had no problems setting it up. The alarm function at times gave spectacular results, waking me up at exactly the right time, feeling very awake and no drowsiness whatsoever. But my brain apparently dislikes waking up so much that it started to take counter-measures. The alarm clock responds to the motion of the arm you are wearing wristband on. Simply put, it will not start the alarm if no motion is detected in the 30 minute 'alarm window'. My brain simply responded by making it first priority not to move the arm with the wristband. After a while, it felt like one arm was in a handcuff, allowing no motion during the entire night. No motion during sleep is not exactly pleasant, and the alarm would not work anymore. Game over (for me).

At the time I felt that a motion sensor might not work for me, but an ECG sensor might as it probably cannot be outsmarted. Recently I found a product that does exactly this: Zeo Personal Sleep Coach. I am considering purchasing this product but have not done so yet. Spending $200+ for a second time for something that might not provide the desired results is something I lose sleep over.
