"It's not about Food" is all about self love,
By Paula Marie Capocchi (joytstar@pacbell.net) (Marin county, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's Not about Food: Change Your Mind; Change Your Life; End Your Obsession with Food and Weight (Mass Market Paperback)
Reading the book "It's not about Food" has deepened my awareness about how mean I can be to myself and use my body and the way I choose to eat as a target for self-abuse. This book gently, yet effectively shines light upon America's cultural obsession with food and weight. It explains the reasons why obsessing, dieting, binging, purging and weighing ourselves constantly are ways learned to take care of ourselves when we know of no other way. Drawing from their own experiences with food and weight obsession, Laurelee Roark and Carol Emery Normandi bring wisdom and understanding to their work. We learn from Carol and Laurelee that this recovery is a journey to know our very soul. They emphasize the process of healing disordered eating and body image through learning to be with yourself, your feelings and whatever is happening in you life and taking care of yourself around it, rather than a goal of weight loss.We learn that we can listen to and trust our bodies and ourselves by the "radical" act of legalizing all foods and allowing ourselves to eat when we are hungry, eat what feels good to us, and stop when we have had enough. This book is written with sensitivity and solid support for those who suffer with this painful issue. It is a book to read over again when a boost in self love is over due.

Must-read for those struggling with food-related addictions,
By A Customer
This review is from: It's Not about Food: Change Your Mind; Change Your Life; End Your Obsession with Food and Weight (Mass Market Paperback)
After years of struggling with food addictions, diets, and bingeing, I am very grateful that I found this book. Along with Overcoming Overeating and When Women Stop Hating Their Bodies(both by Munter and Hirschman), this is the most important book I have read. I highly recommend it to anyone struggling with a food addition or body-thought disorder.

If you are a woman who has ever suffered or is suffering from an eating disorder, this book will change your life. It honestly touched me during a time when nothing much did. I discovered new depths to myself, and saw how strong and magical we can be

This book was full of great information and stories about how women have allowed society to dictate how they look and how they should feel about how they look. Though some of these stories about anorexics and bulimics felt a little out of place for me (someone who eats to cover up feelings), I gleaned something from every story told. This book is impowering in its message to get out there and seek your worth in more than your body image and to give yourself what you need to be successful.

Powerful and overwhelming but true,

This book really grabbed me. It was almost too much for me by the time I got done reading it. It will really give you a lot to think about and I recommend it to anyone out there who hates their body and is constantly dieting. If every woman read this book maybe we'd all stop putting ourselves down all the time.

Determined to Live,

I was in the bookstore looking for another book but came across this one. I'm so glad I did. I had tried every diet out there within reason and found that nothing helped. It seems that whenever someone tells you that you can't have something, you want it more -- especially when it comes to food. They help you to understand why this is. I am recommending this book to every woman I know, especially if she's on another diet!!!!!

This is such an excellent book. My only fear is that many people do not realize that dieting can cause eating disorders and that's why I wish the book was also in the Health/Diet section of the stores. However it is NOT a diet book, but teaches us to eat naturally and normally and how to loose weight and keep it off by loving ourselves. However it is much more than that still. It helped me realize that my body is unique and may not conform to the cultural ideal. Thank God for this book.

Does not help at all,
By vixen "book hound" (usa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's Not about Food: Change Your Mind; Change Your Life; End Your Obsession with Food and Weight (Mass Market Paperback)
I actually returned this book because it had very little , if anything, to do with WHY you actually compulsively eat. it did not go into or even explained the psychological factors that influence C.O. all this book talk about is how women's self-image is polluted with diet ads etc, etc. it does not deal at all with how to actually stop, in an effective way.same thing as Overcoming Overeating. the whole point of the book is to stop dieting and to stop having a dieting mentality. also it doe snot deal with the actual cause of you overeating ( which is not dieting) if you really want to overcome overeating and end your obsession with food, you need to know why you are physiologically addicted to food. why you find so much pleasure in it. and for that you have to read books with substantial research, not just a feminist sound-off. read : the pleasure trap, LIfe is hard- food is easy , to name a few good ones. but this one and her other one won't help you at all.

This book was a gift given to me by a friend years ago. I own and have read about twelve books on the topic. Out of all of them, this has been by far the best. It's the kind of book that takes you on a journey inside yourself. If you have any eating issues then this book is a worthwhile read.

what a concept,
By A Customer
This review is from: It's Not about Food: Change Your Mind; Change Your Life; End Your Obsession with Food and Weight (Mass Market Paperback)
Eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full. Such a simple concept yet it was not something that ever occurred to me during my years as a bulimic. Carol and Laurelee have been there, they are not doctors and did not learn what they know from a textbook. It is a long process but this book offers a different approach, not another quick fix.
