4.0 out of 5 stars A visual delight, August 15, 2011
This review is from: The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My (A tale of Moomin Valley) (Hardcover)
It isn't often that my first impression of a book centers on delightful cutouts--of every shape and size in varied locations on the page--even extending along the edges. And each an integral part of the design on both sides of the page! Marveling as I moved through the story, I remembered Jansson began her career as a visual artist and never stopped working in a variety of mediums.

Drawings are line drawings. Expressions--even those of minor characters--run the gamut. Detailed backgrounds consist of shapes with sharp edges that provide intricate designs. Colors--not the usual primary shades--flood each page as they run into other interesting shades. Indeed, a visual delight.

The story concerns "Little My" who is lost. When Moomintroll strolls home "with milk for Mother" he comes across Little My's big sister Mumble. Mumble is crying because she can't find her sister. And so, Moomintroll and Mumble begin their quest. They have frightful adventures until, during a crisis, Little My rescues them. Of course, they rejoice because they've found and saved her.

And so it goes. I admit Little My is not my favorite literary character, but Moomintroll and Moominmama save the day. For example, once home, Moominmama discovers the milk had turned "sour and cheesy." But never fear. Moominmama always knows how to turn disaster into joy.

Just one word about the translation. Superb. The text flows with delightful rhythm and creative rhyme.
