I truly believe that one of my history teachers used Abbe Raynal's book as an authoritative work to teach the American Revolution. Raynal wrote what was supposed to be an informative book reporting the causes, actions, and results, leading up to, and including the American Revolution. Instead, Raynal minimizes or ignores completely the provocations the American colonists endured leading up to the revolution,(The Intolerable Acts, The Boston Massacre etc.) Gets the chronology of events wrong,(messing up cause and effect) and plagiarizes Tom Paine's pamphlets. Tom politely corrects the misinformation, backing his corrections with proof, and proves Raynal plagiarized his pamphlets, or paraphrased them without giving credit. Paine refrains from the personal attacks that sometimes mar his work, and makes some shrewed observations about both the present and the future. A very good work.
