A book that will appeal to those who actually contemplate life, human interaction and existence itself.
Intellectual or not, this book is for those who are not fanatical about their beliefs and past conditioning.
Both Agnostics and the Religious will find this book a wonderful read that will often present your point of view succinctly.
It is a heavy read as Marcel packs a lot in every sentence. How I wish I knew the original French, because even the English translation reads so beautifully.

The book discuses (often Socratically) humanity's struggle in a mechanistic, materialistic world. He also presents the thought that this ego-led attitude prevents us from appreciating the mystery of life and existence itself.

He covers fanaticism (very relevant today), intelligence, the issues of self interest, individual suffering, and love.

It should be a compulsory "text book" to be diligently studied by anyone who wants to "run" our country - senator or congressman.

I strongly encourage those who have not been sucked into one side or the other of our deeply divided country to read this book (and also those who wish to escape the tentacles of their past conditioning, ego, and political dogmas).

Gabriel Honoré Marcel (1889-1973) was a French philosopher, playwright, music critic and Christian existentialist. He wrote many other books, such as Mystery of Being: 1. Reflection and Mystery, Mystery of Being: 2. Faith and Reality, Metaphysical Journal, The Philosophy Of Existentialism, Being and Having - An Existentialist Diary, Philosophical Fragments 1909-1914, etc.

[NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 273-page paperback edition.]

He wrote in the Preface to this 1952 book, “The dynamic element in my philosophy, taken as a whole, can be seen as an obstinate and untiring battle against the spirit of abstraction… I have played the part of a prosecuting counsel against every philosophy that seemed to me to remain the prisoner of abstractions.” (Pg.
