Vitamin D has long been seen as key to bone health--there is much research establishing it as a calcium builder and bone fortifier--but its beneficial effects appear to extend beyond protecting against osteoporosis. Numerous studies link higher vitamin D levels with a stronger immune system and a lower risk of certain forms of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression and dementia. These benefits may be related to vitamin D's vital role in combating the systemic inflammation that underpins so many age-related diseases.
