Hi, I am looking for the cheapest way to renew my now expired family gold membership. Can I buy gold cards on sale and put them towards a family plan? Any suggestions appreciated, my kids are now having withdraws. lol
I know that if you have 12 months of a single account then you can upgrade to family gold for like 30 bucks so if you snag a card on here for 35 dollars then you can get a year of family for 65 instead of the 90. There is a limit on how much they will apply towards switching to a family account though so you should probably check the website or call just to be sure, but this is what my family did.
We had a month trial and started with the single gold account but had purchased a 12 month card for 39.99 since it was a deal with the game we bought and then I called and upgraded to family and paid 30 dollars with my credit card. FYI Xbox also gave us three extra months of time for the other three silver accounts that had one month free trials that we combined into the family account. I think we ended up with 16 months of family gold for about 70 dollars.
You can't use these single account cards with Family memberships. There's no way to do it as a friend of mine recently found out. So these cards are useless unless you do the following...
You must first remove an account from your family plan so it reverts back to a normal account. Then use your GOLD cards on that account. I believe she told me you have to wait 30 days before you can add the account back on though. After that, re add the account to your family account, and the amount of time left will be converted into family time.
Microsoft support cannot and WILL NOT help you add these cards in any way, or at least out of several reps my friend talked to, NOBODY could or would help her. So be warned... Family accounts will make you jump through hoops.
EDIT NOTE: If only 2 accounts, it's cheaper to break them into separate accounts, and then bargain hunt for 1yr memberships such as the current $36 price. On average, they can almost always be found for about $45, still less than the $100 you pay for the family plan. If you have 3 accounts, it still yet may be easier to shell out the extra $10 dollars at the $35~36 price point just so you can continue to use these cards. or in case somebody buys a card as a gift (you can use it). Also worth noting you don't have to give Microsoft your payment information in this case which is good because they've had theft issues the last few months.
