apparently it is just one cord from the headset to the controller. nothing to the console or television

Correct. No batteries either. It's basically like a set of headphones you would use to listen to music on your iPod. The headset adapter is what plugs into the controller, then you can plug your headphones into the adapter. The Xbox and Controller do all the sound processing and powering of the headphones. They work surprisingly well.
