Before Bushnell began his field work in the late 1930's, the archeology of the Santa Elena Peninsula "was to all intents and purposes unknown." The area studied is the most westerly portion of Ecuador, along the southern part of the coast of Ecuador, north of the River Guayas and just south of the Equator.
