The more complicated bits of guitar playing are done with the left-hand (fret-hand) for a right-handed player. I originally started out as a right-handed 23-year old player. If I hadn't been gifted a right-handed instrument, I would've preferred to learn "left-handed".

When the instructions refer to teaching right-hand playing and left-hand playing, they mean strum-hand and fret-hand, respectively.
