Yes. It allows for higher amps like smart phones, ipads, kindles etc. Just watch the charging indicator on the ipad, if it doesn't show "charging" change the switch(on the back of the clock) to the other setting.

Yes, all the buttons are easily accessible and sensibly laid out. For setting the two alarms or the time there are + and - buttons so when setting an earlier time you don't have to go all the way around the clock.
