here are the requirement for the echo smart pens.....but I don't see the one you are asking about (Livescribe 8 GB Echo Smartpen Pro Pack (APX-00007) ) anywhere. Are you sure this is the one you are looking for? As far as I can tell the 8GB APX-00007 does not exist

No, you have to use Livescribe paper with the pen whether you're recording audio or not. To record without audio, turn on the pen and start writing on Livescribe paper.
