1-it's not a significant source of light by its self to create professional quality lighting. It us good for a hair light, and background lighting. 2-yes, bit it doesn't produce enough light to set off a more powerful main light. 3-the red bottons are for making the lights go off, to warm them up/or test them.

What shutter speed are you shooting at? On most Canon models the sync is usually between 1/60 and 1/200. If you are shooting any faster than 1/200 your pictures can be dark or half dark.

They are about 2 1/2 feet so 15 inch from center they come with flash bulbs I use day light cfl bulbs with thrm, I plan to buy one more set its well worth the money..
