Q My wife has recurrent sudden episodes of heart palpitations and dizziness. Three specialists have ruled out heart disease and concluded that her arrhythmia is related to panic attacks. She still thinks she has a heart condition, however, and is getting progressively more anxious about it. What do you recommend?

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

A It can be difficult to distinguish symptoms of heart disease from symptoms of panic attacks. Panic attacks are periods of intense tear or anxiety that tend to come on quickly and usually end within 10 minutes. These attacks may be accompanied by symptoms such as: a racing heart; sweating; trembling or shaking; shortness of breath or choking; chest pain; dizziness; tingling, nausea, and flushing.
